Since 1996, Able Mobile Recording Lab has been producer/engineer/musician Jay Sherman-Godfrey’s ad hoc studio, capturing human, wood, wire and tube powered performances in lofts, bedrooms, kitchens, studios, clubs, gymnasiums, barns—anywhere with a plug, like-minded musicians, and favorable ambiance. Over the years, the lab has had several semi-permanent homes in Williamsburg and Greenpoint Brookl
yn. Now, after a several-year hiatus, Sherman-Godfrey is reviving AMRL in his new hometown, Kingston, New York
AMRL has recorded dozens of artists, including Laura Cantrell, Micheal Shelley, Mike Ferrio, Girls on Grass, Mark Bacino, Will Rigby, Courtney Lee Adams, and the Hal Weary Trio. Proprietor Jay Sherman-Godfrey has been a mainstay on the New York City rock, roots, and country scene since forming the World Famous Blue Jays with Jeremy Tepper in the early 1980s. He's gone on to play guitar (and sometimes cello) on the stage and in the studio with and eclectic mix of artists—from They Might Be Giants to The Bottle Rockets, Mojo Nixon, and filmmaker Micheal Moore. He is best known as a producer, contributing songwriter, and lead guitar player for Laura Cantrell, helming her first two critically acclaimed albums, Not the Trembling Kind and When the Roses Bloom Again. After releasing two collections of his own songs in the 2000s—The EP Two Score and LP Public Address—Sherman-Godfrey currently fronts the power pub rock trio Wire Troop, which released its debut album, Trio Power, in 2019.
