I play a little game, trying to name the movies that have changed me. Every book I read does. Few movies do. Nearly no TV series do. I can barely stand any of them. But Lynch got under my skin and taught me something about myself and about life. I consider Twin Peaks: The Return to be his master work, and he might even agree; he loved Twin Peaks above all else. It's an 18-hour film disguised as a TV series, and it is astonishing. Lynch's soul, his existence as an artist and his creative work all aligned to activate and change something in me; to condition me as an artist and a writer; and to look at the world honestly and acknowledge what I see. The thing about his films that drives most people mad — they "don't make sense" and "you don't know what is happening" — were what I loved about them the most...their elliptical quality, their refusal to resolve in a tidy way (which I abhor about Hollywood) and all the unresolved matters...well, I am in love.

"What year is it?"

A visionary, his films included “Eraserhead,” “Blue Velvet” and “Mulholland Drive,” considered his masterwork. He brought his skewed view to the small screen with “Twin Peaks.”
