🚨🌧️🌀 SOUTHEAST ALASKA WEATHER ALERT: THE SKY HAS CHOSEN VIOLENCE 🌀🌧️🚨

An atmospheric river is sliding into the Panhandle late Thursday through Saturday, bringing snow, rain, wind, and a personal vendetta against storm drains.

What’s on the menu:
• Snow that immediately regrets its life choices and turns into rain
• 1–4 inches of rain (locally: more, because of course)
• Deep snowpack = clogged drains = “Why is there a lake here?”
• Creeks rising fast and hills thinking about moving

🌬️ Wind Update
South winds 25–35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph, strong enough to:
• Yeet your trash cans
• Reorganize your yard
• Cancel electricity
• Test every knot you tied while saying “that’s probably fine”

🪁 DO. NOT. FLY. A. KITE.
This is not kite weather.
This is “your kite files for independence and moves to Prince of Wales Island” weather.
Also, power lines exist. Let’s not meet them professionally.

👨‍🚒 KFD Survival Tips
• Clear storm drains.
• Tie down anything you like or would miss
• Expect flooding, power outages, and bad decisions by gravity
• If water starts going places it shouldn’t—call early

We’ll be out there riding the chaos so you don’t have to.
Stay dry, stay grounded, and keep your kites indoors. 😉

🚨❄️ WEATHER WINS TODAY ❄️🚨01/05/2026

🏛️ All City offices
⚡ All KPU offices

Translation:
• Snow showed up
• Wind got loud
• Rain threatened everyone’s morale
• The weather chose violence

If you were planning to go outside — congratulations, you are now working from your couch.
If you were hoping school was still on — sorry, parents… today’s lesson is Weather Math (snow + rain + wind = nope).

Essential services will still be operating, and emergency crews are out doing their thing. Everyone else:
✔️ Stay home

❄️🚨 SOUTHEAST ALASKA WEATHER ALERT: THIS STORM WOKE UP AND CHOSE CHAOS 🚨❄️

Heads up Petersburg, Prince of Wales, Wrangell, and Ketchikan —
A large storm system is rolling in this weekend and it has main character energy.

What the forecast says:
• 6–9 inches of snow
• Winds up to 40 mph

What it means:
• Snow blowing sideways
• Roads doing whatever they want
• That one hill suddenly becoming a personality test

🕘 Saturday | 9 AM – 9 PM
Also known as:
• “I should’ve gone yesterday”
• “This looked plowed five minutes ago”
• “Why is everyone driving 3 mph but still sliding?”

🌧️➡️❄️➡️🌧️➡️❄️
Expect snow, rain, slush, freezing rain, and betrayal.
The rain/snow line will move north, south, pause for coffee, then change its mind.

🚗 If you absolutely must travel:
• Flashlight (it’ll be dark at noon anyway)
• Food & water (for when traffic becomes a group activity)
• A full tank of gas
• Confidence, but not too much confidence

🏠 Before it hits:
• Secure loose items
• Turn the heat on
• Check your drains
• Make peace with your driveway — it belongs to winter now

📢 Community reminders:
• Help your neighbors
• Clear fire hydrants
• Give plows and emergency vehicles space
• If the road “looks fine,” that’s when it’s lying to you

More updates coming — this storm has sequels planned.

Slow down. Stay warm.
And please… don’t test gravity this weekend. 😉

Small Business Saturday hits differently in Southeast Alaska. These shops aren’t just places we buy things, they’re owned by our neighbors, our friends, the people standing next to us at the rink, the grocery store, the parade, the food drive.

When you spend a few dollars here, it stays here.
It pays a local employee.
It keeps a dream alive.
It helps a family put dinner on the table.
It keeps the lights on for the businesses that keep our community vibrant and strong.

Look Local First.
Because when we support local businesses, we’re investing in the heart of Ketchikan, and building the kind of community we’re proud to call home.

Happy Small Business Saturday, Ketchikan. Let’s show up for each other.
