With more than 10,000 volunteer hours contributed in 2024 to the surrounding area, Texas Hill Country Gardeners are a force for beauty, gardening and plant education in our community.

The 2024 President’s Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Jackie Connelly. The U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award was initiated by President George H.W. Bush in 2003. The award recognizes exceptional individuals who volunteer their time and talents to meet their community’s needs.

Volunteers from the Hill Country Chapter of the American Red Cross and members of the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated the remodeling of the Red Cross offices at 333 Earl Garrett St. in downtown Kerrville with a ribbon cutting.

“They started the remodeling last summer,” said Debbie Zabica, executive director of the Hill Country Chapter. “They put in new flooring, countertops, bathrooms and energy efficient windows.”

It’s time for Texans to brace for cedar fever season once again.

Cedar fever is an allergic reaction to the pollen released by mountain cedar trees, and unfortunately, you don’t have to be allergic to the pollen for it to affect you.

In Texas, the predominant species of mountain cedar is Ashe juniper, making cedar fever especially irritating in the Hill Country west of I-35, where there are primarily juniper trees mixed in with oaks and a few other species.

KPA! is shaking it up this year by collecting donations on Saturday, Dec. 21, and then distributing them to pet owners in need on Sunday, Dec. 22.

The event will take place in the Kerr County Courthouse parking lot at the corner of Sidney Baker and Main Street in downtown Kerrville. The hours will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday for donation drop off and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday for pet owners to pick up food.

Make a pet’s holiday by donating food, litter or pet toys to the Annual Kerrville Pets Alive! Fill Their Bowls Pet Food Drive.

The city of Kerrville announced the winner of its annual Kerrville Christmas Poem contest at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

Katy Kappel won this year’s honor with her submission, “Christmas in Kerrville.”

The contest is sponsored each year by the city. The Kerrville Christmas Committee reviewed each poem submitted and selected their three favorites.

Those three poems were posted on the city of Kerrville’s page, where citizens voted for their favorite poem that best captured “Christmas in Kerrville” by “liking” their favorite poem.
