PEST ALERT
Diaprepes Root Weevil (Diaprepes abbreviatus) has recently been found in Harris county. If you spot this pest, immediately report to the TDA Plant Quality Program by calling 512-463-7660 or emailing a photo to [email protected]

Diaprepes Root Weevil feeds on more than 270 species of plants in 59 plant families, many which are common in the green industry. The larval stage of this pest is found in the soil, where they feed on the roots of host plants. This can girdle the taproot, preventing the transport of water. Additionally, this type of injury provides an avenue for root rot infections by Phytophtora. Adult weevils are about 1 cm in length and feed on leaves of plants creating characteristic notches on the leaves (see photo below).

The spread of this pest is associated with the movement of nursery stock from infested areas, including Florida. Nurseries should inspect incoming plant material from infested areas.
