STATE OF HEALTHCARE AT PETERSON HEALTH

Cory Edmondson, President and CEO of Peterson Health, was the first presenter at last Tuesday’s Business Healthcare Forum hosted by the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce at the Inn of the Hills Conference Center.

“One of the top three things that people want to know about in a community if moving here is the availability of medical care. Access and availability is important. If not available, they have to leave the community for their healthcare,” Edmondson told the group of chamber members and guests.

The other two things that people want to know about the community are the schools and the quality of life issues.

'SMART GIRLS WITH ISSUES'

Award-winning investigative journalist Sara Carter spoke at a special evening meeting of the Kerr County Republican Women’s Club last Friday. Carter is best known for her warzone reporting on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, issues of national security and, most recently, on the immigration issues on the U.S. and Mexico border. She is a regular contributor to FOX News.

Carter, a California native, said she and her husband have now “permanently become Texans” after spending time in Washington D.C. when not overseas on assignment.

“I’ve had enough with Washington D.C., but I haven’t had enough of the fight,” Carter told the local Republican club members. “I want to be with like-minded people. People who are willing to stand up to tyranny. People who are willing to speak up and not be afraid to say what they feel and speak the truth. That’s what we need to do as Americans.”

IT'S OFFICIAL

Schreiner University’s century of history is being celebrated with multiple events during 2023. This past weekend was filled with activities on campus during the fall parent’s weekend, which culminated with Monday evening’s official centennial celebration program and was held exactly 100 years from the day Schreiner first opened on Sept. 18, 1923.

The evening event included a concert outside on the lawn area behind the Cailloux Activity Center with a series of videos about the history of the institution, plus music by the Symphony of the Hills featuring the world premier of Schreiner University’s Centennial Opus.

The opus (original artistic composition) was written by a celebrated composer, Dr. Donald Grantham, as homage to the university’s 100-year history, and reflected the hope and mission of the university as they move into their second century as an institution of higher education.

MAYOR SHARES PERSONAL STORY AT 'HONOR' EVENT

“Honor Your Hero” was the theme of last week’s Fields of Honor event hosted by Gunny’s Warriors at the Hill Country Youth Event Center’s patriotic salute to heroes of all kinds in our community or who were related to residents of the Hill Country.

At the opening ceremony Saturday Mayor Judy Eychner remembered her father as her hero and read a letter that he sent back to his community from the war front in France in 1944. Like so many others who were honored with more than 500 flags that flew proudly in River Star Park for the three days of the event, Eychner’s father’s story tugged at the emotions of many in attendance.

SILVER-HAIRED LEGISLATURE LOOKING FOR KERR LEADERS

he Texas Silver-Haired Legislature, which advocates for issues impacting older Texans, meets in Austin in May of even-numbered years when the Texas Legislature is not in session. Edward Rogers from Boerne, a leader in the TSHL, came to Kerrville recently to speak on the organization’s impact on older Texans.

The resolution to establish the TSHL was passed by the Texas Board on Aging in 1984 and was adopted by the 69th Texas Legislature the following year. The first session of the TSHL was held in 1986 and the group has met every two years since that time.

“TSHL was established during the Mark White administration. We are a volunteer, non-partisan, privately funded organization,” Rogers said.

MILESTONE MOMENT CELEBRATED

It was prayerful discernment, precision planning, and a passion for the Word of God, that led Auxiliary Bishop Michael Boulette, of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, to become the founding director of St. Peter upon the Water: A Center for Spiritual Direction and Formation, located in Ingram.

On Saturday, Boulette officiated a Eucharistic Celebration at St. Peter upon the Water recognizing the 20th anniversary of receiving permission from then Archbishop Patrick Flores to provide spiritual direction on behalf of the Archdiocese fulltime, and to officially launch what would become St. Peter upon the Water. The celebration also honored the late Beverly Marie Pevehouse, whom he said generously provided 100 percent of the financing for the property and 90% for the construction, with the blessing of her daughter, Missy Hoelscher, and the Pevehouse family.

HABITAT BLESSES 'CENTENNIAL HOUSE'

he three-way partnership between Schreiner University, First Presbyterian Church and Habitat for Humanity Kerr County, part of the Centennial events of the university, was celebrated last Friday with the blessing of a new Habitat home for Carolina Sierra and her daughter Jackie. The home is the 123rd home built by the local Habitat affiliate since it was created in the late 1980s, and one of the last three homes to be completed in the Maud Jennings Subdivision.

“What an extraordinary experience this has been to see something emerge - a home - from what was before just a vacant space. Since Schreiner is celebrating its Centennial year, you’ll have to forgive me for looking back and drawing a parallel to when we first started and how an empty field outside of Kerrville became Schreiner Institute, then Schreiner College, and now Schreiner University,” said Schreiner University President Charlie McCormick.

FIGHTING THE FLU

When temperatures outside are over the century mark it’s difficult to realize that fall and flu season are just around the corner. Last Wednesday a total of 832 local residents took advantage of the annual drive-thru flu shot clinic, co-sponsored by H-E-B, Peterson Health and Kerr County, and held at the Hill Country Youth Event Center.

“This is an annual service that H-E-B provides for the community and the Kerr County Office of Emergency Management and Kerr County CERT are proud to support them in their effort,” said Kerr County Emergency Management Director Dub Thomas

“My goal has been 1,000 vaccinations every year. We gave out over 1,100 vaccinations last year. We were a little short of my goal, but I’m still happy with the outcome,” Thomas added.

FUNDRAISER PLANNED FOR AVILA FAMILY

Eighteen months have passed since a devastating fire destroyed the interior of the home belonging to David Avila and his wife, Alicia. The Avilas have owned the residence on the corner of Jefferson St. and A St. for a half-century, and raised their five children in the home.

In February 2022 their son Adam was trying to keep his plants on the patio attached to the house protected from the cold. He had purchased a used electric space heater and it was plugged into a power strip supposedly with a surge protector. The Kerrville Fire Department determined that the power strip and heater caused the fire which burned much of the wall of the living room, kitchen and master bedroom and filled the rest of the home with smoke, which caused the family to lose virtually everything they owned.

A fundraiser to help the Avila family complete the restoration of the home after the fire is planned for Sept. 22 through Sept. 24 at the Center Point Mercantile on the corner of Stoneleigh Road and Hwy. 27 (where you turn to go the Center Point athletic fields).

S&P GLOBAL REAFFIRMS CITY OF KERRVILLE CREDIT RATING AT AA

The AA credit rating will apply to the city’s upcoming sale of voter-approved general obligation bonds in the amount of $45 million to fund a new Public Safety Facility. S&P delivered the following assessment of the city’s financial position:

· “We expect Kerrville will likely manage its debt and maintain, what we consider, very strong finances during the two-year outlook, supported by financial policies and practices and a growing tax base.

· Officials also maintain a five-year financial forecast that reflects conservative assumptions with a goal of ensuring fiscal sustainability and maintaining desired reserves. A formal policy requires maintaining unassigned general fund balance at 15%-25% of expenditures to meet cash-flow requirements.

S&P Global Ratings, an international leader in credit analysis, recently maintained the City of Kerrville’s credit rating at AA. The rating reflects S&P’s view of the city’s:
