Despite being outscored in the second half, the Kent State men’s basketball team secured its first road victory of 2026, defeating the Buffalo Bulls by a final score of 87-81.

With a little over a month remaining in the regular season, the win moves the Flashes to 13-4 (4-1). Two home and two away games remain for KSU, before its first game against rival Akron at the end of the month.

Following the Steelers seventh consecutive playoff loss in a 30-6 blowout at home against the Houston Texans, head coach Mike Tomlin is stepping down, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler. Tomlin, the longest-tenured head coach actively in all of North American professional sports, had been with Pittsburgh for 19 seasons.

Tomlin, who at the time was the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings, was hired by the Rooney family back in 2007, becoming the first Black head coach in franchise history. He replaced Bill Cowher, who followed Chuck Noll.

In nearly 20 seasons as Pittsburgh’s head coach, Tomlin accumulated a record of 193-114-2, winning Super Bowl XLIII in his second season against the Arizona Cardinals. With the win, he became the youngest head coach in NFL history to win a Super Bowl at 36, before being surpassed by Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay in the 2021-2022 season.

I have always joked with my parents that one day I’d end up in the back of a cop car, but I never imagined it would look like this.

On TV, you see the flashing lights, the foot chases, the dramatic arrests, but you never see what it’s like inside the cruiser. Everyone knows about the cage — the metal divider between the arrested and the arresters — and the bars along the windows, but the seats weren’t padded. They were stiff, cold and made of molded plastic. No door handles. No way out. Just a locked cell on wheels.

“You said you go to Akron U,” officer Swaggard asked, breaking the silence.

The Kent State School of Art displayed a collection of work focused on professional daydreaming at the KSU Downtown Gallery located on Main Street.

On Dec. 5 and Dec. 6, what was once an empty gallery became a wonderland of one’s deepest imagination, filled with objects and art that felt and looked like a daydream.

Free professional daydreaming certificates in lollygagging, dillydallying and, of course, daydreaming, and many more were given to anyone who stopped by the 48-Hour Daydream Institute.

On Monday, Dec. 1, the Ben Curtis Family Foundation received national attention after New England Patriots’ offensive assistant and Kent Roosevelt High School graduate, Riley Larkin, selected the organization for the NFL’s “My Cause My Cleats” campaign. The Patriots came away with a 33–15 win, but for people back in Northeast Ohio, the highlight was the national attention on a local nonprofit.

Larkin said choosing the foundation was an easy and personal decision. He grew up in Kent, volunteered with BCFF throughout high school and college and said he wanted to use the national platform to give back to the community that shaped him.

“I had so many great friends growing up here, and some didn’t know where their next meal was coming from,” Larkin said. “I always knew that if I ever had an opportunity to give back to Kent, I would.”

From baseball to wrestling, Kent State’s Varsity K Hall of Fame has more than 300 athletes, trainers and coaches.

Opened in 1979, the long corridors lined with portraits are on the first floor of the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center near lobbies A and C. It is open to anyone.

The Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding student-athletes and coaches who have had long-term success at Kent State. Student athletes are automatically qualified if they’ve earned two varsity letters or if they’ve received first-team all-conference, conference player of the year or All-American awards. Recommendations from the public are also considered, said Brian Grubich, the assistant athletics director.

On Wednesday, the Kent State men’s basketball team won a close game against the Austin Peay Governors, winning 96-84. The Flashes have now won eight consecutive games, and have just one non-conference home game left to play on Saturday.

With the win, KSU moves to 8-1 (0-0), and will be favored against its next three opponents before taking on the number one team in the country in Purdue later this month.

Austin Peay had momentum heading into Wednesday’s contest after defeating NIU last week, but fell to 4-4 (0-0) with the loss.

“The Underground Railroad story is an Ohio story, and it’s one that the state should be really proud of,” said Fran Stewart, the co-founder and treasurer of Restore Cleveland Hope.

Although exact numbers are not documented because the Underground Railroad was illegal, an estimated 200,000 people escaped, and it’s thought that more than 40% of those who escaped came through Ohio, Stewart said.

Kent was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, and just outside the restaurant Over Easy at the Depot on Franklin Ave. is a historical marker that shares some history.

The Kent State University Museum and the School of Fashion are preparing to “take flight” with a bird-themed exhibition that will open in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History on April 22, 2026.

The idea for the exhibition was inspired by museum curator Sara Hume’s 2018 exhibition, “For the Birds.” 2018 marked the 100th anniversary of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, serving as the inspiration behind Hume’s exhibition. The MBTA was passed in 2018 to protect bird species from being hunted.

“So, that was sort of the impetus for the exhibition, and then it sort of explored the ways that birds were used in fashion and decorative arts in general,” Hume said.
