Surprise surprise! The KPD and HAPO Community Credit Union are paired up for a marketing dynamic duo, to make HAPO look good to the community while they are committing fraud against all of their members who have taken loans. HAPO owes all of it back to the people who were being frauded by them.
POSITIVE POLICING: Here’s another great positive policing story to get you through the mid workweek! Recently our Traffic Unit responded to a disabled blocking vehicle at the busy intersection of Highway 395 and 10th Avenue. Motor Officer Greenough found the wonderful Jenne Welch assisting a stranded motorist. While this may sound simple, Welch went to a lot of trouble to make sure the stranded motorist, a teenage driver, was taken care of.
Welch did not know the driver, but came upon them stranded in the roadway. Dozens of vehicles had passed the blocking vehicle at this point without stopping to help. Welch finding out the driver had run out of fuel, took it upon herself to go to a nearby fuel station, purchase a five-gallon fuel can and fuel and return to provide it to the distressed driver. The story gets better. Welch, a mother herself, had been on her way to pick up her kids from school. Knowing the driver needed help, Welch made other arrangements to get her kids picked up so the driver wasn’t left stranded alone.
Welch did not ask for compensation from the motorists and said she just wanted to pass it forward. Welch’s actions turned the day around for a distressed motorist, and helped more quickly clear a hazard at a busy intersection that could have resulted in a collision. Her actions made it safer for the motorist and many other Kennewick drivers that day. Above all, Welch selflessly assisted someone in need and taking care of each other is a cornerstone of the positive policing program.
Motor Officer Greenough met Welch and provided her a positive policing $100 gift card. Join us in thanking Welch for helping the motorist, Kennewick drivers and for setting a great example, which may inspire others to help in a time of need!
The positive policing program is made possible by HAPO Community Credit Union and the KPD Foundation. The goal of the program is twofold. First is to promote and inspire those in our amazing community to make it safer by rewarding those who are selflessly doing random acts of kindness. We know the partnership between KPD and the community is key to making it a safer place for everyone. Secondly, our officers are often thrown into the worst of situations with the goal to make it safe and which sometimes requires holding offenders accountable. This program gives our officers an opportunity to also focus on the positive happening in the community creating an opportunity for great conversation! Being able to have that conversation could be beneficial for both the officer and the citizen. We know when we start having conversations, great things happen!
