The city of Kenner is under a heat advisory today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with “feel-like” temperatures expected to reach between 108 to 112 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Heat illness can occur quickly once temperatures exceed 108 degrees and residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned area, check up on relatives and neighbors, and to never leave young children and pets in vehicles for even short periods of time.

Portion of 21st Street to be Closed on Friday for Sewer Main Repairs

Eastbound 21st Street will be closed from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, July 8, at the east side of Roosevelt Boulevard, Wastewater Department officials announced.

A Wastewater repair crew will be working on the gravity sewer main line that crosses 21st Street in the pedestrian crosswalk from the southeast corner at Roosevelt to the median.

Heavy Storms Possible Today and Through Saturday

Circulation surrounding a tropical disturbance in the northwest Gulf of Mexico will increase the chances for showers and thunderstorms through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The disturbance is moving slowly westward and there is a 40 percent chance of some strengthening before landfall, which is likely in south Texas, forecasters said.

The greatest risk for heavy storms is in the afternoon and evening hours today and continuing through Saturday, forecasters said. Today, rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are generally expected with some areas getting higher amounts.

The Emergency Management Office is monitoring the weather and additional updates will be posted, as necessary.

Street Dedicated to Honor Marie Martin Clesi

Mayor Zahn today unveiled the dedication of 6th Street in front of the Kenner Council on Aging to honor Marie Martin Clesi, an active civic and political leader in Kenner for more than 30 years, who died in December, 2020.

Marie started her business career as a math teacher and became one of the first female State Farm agents in the state and was very active with the Kenner and Jefferson Council on Aging.

She was elected as an at-large member to the Jefferson Parish Republican Committee and was also elected to the Republican State Central Committee.

Wednesday’s ceremony at the Kenner Council on Aging included Marie’s daughters, Tara and Lara, grandchildren, Jami, Joshua and Matthew and great-grandson John Roger, along with many friends.

FOR JULY 4TH HOLIDAY

Kenner, LA. – All city offices will be closed on Monday, July 4. Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5.

There will be garbage collection on Monday. However, pickup will begin an hour earlier because of the July 4th holiday and residents are encouraged to put their trash out the night before.

Tropical Weather Update

The disturbance in the northwest Gulf of Mexico continues to move slowly westward and there is a 30 percent chance of tropical cyclone development, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Even if the system does not strengthen, forecasters said they expect additional shower and storm coverage in Kenner throughout the week.

Today, there is a threat of locally heavy rain during daylight hours that could produce street flooding. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are generally expected, but some areas could receive higher amounts and rainfall rates of 3 to 4 inches an hour are possible in the strongest storms.

The Emergency Management Office is monitoring the weather and additional updates will be posted, as necessary.

Tropical Weather Update

There is slight chance of development for an area of low pressure in the northern Gulf of Mexico that is slowly drifting to the west, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Currently the chances for development are 10 percent over the next 2 days and 20 percent over the next 5 days, forecasters said. Any strengthening would be slow to occur, but forecasters say even if the system doesn’t become a tropical cyclone, there is an enhanced chance of rain and thunderstorms throughout the week.

The Kenner Emergency Operations Center will continue to monitor local weather conditions and any developments or changes in the weather in the Gulf.

Tropical Weather Update

An area of low pressure could develop over the northern Gulf of Mexico by the early or middle parts of next week, but any development is expected to be slow to occur, according to the National Hurricane Center.

There is currently a 20 percent chance of tropical cyclone development for the next 5 days. Forecasters said the system is expected to drift to the west toward our area and then to the northwest Gulf of Mexico.

Any impacts from this system are very uncertain at this time. Even if there is no additional development, there is still a potential for heavy rainfall in our area.

Heat Advisory in Effect Today, Not Quite as Hot on Sunday

A heat advisory is in effect in Kenner from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today with heat index readings expected to reach between 108 and 112 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat index readings are forecast to be slightly lower on Sunday – between 102 and 108 degrees, and forecasters say the chance for afternoon showers and storms increases on Sunday.

Residents should avoid spending any time outdoors for an extended period and to drink plenty of fluids and take breaks in air-conditioned rooms if they must be outside. Remember to check on relatives and neighbors and keep pets inside or in an area with shade and plenty of water.

Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles for any amount of time. Additional information will be posted here, as necessary.
