Two plainclothes detectives had a hunch and it ultimately paid off. According to Det. Sgt. Michal Gontarczuk: On Dec. 19, Lt. Kearny Second Ward Councilman Richard Konopka, a Democrat, resigned his seat during the Monday, Jan. 6, annual reorganization meeting, setting up what will likely be an all-out battle to replace him. Konopka first took office 11 years ago. At that meeting, former Kearny Police Chief George King piped the governing body into the council chambers — and that was followed by an invocation, the Pledge and the National Anthem, which was sung by Brandi Leigh Miller....

Ruth King knew she wanted to do something unique for holidays at the Hudson Arts and Science Charter School on Midland Avenue involving the Grinch and the Kearny Police Department. But the question was specifically how to make the program unique. And that’s where her son, Police Officer Sean King, entered the picture. His thought was to have the Grinch come to the school during a bullying presentation....

Christian Boyce admits he didn’t really know what to expect when he took over as the boys basketball coach at North Arlington in late October, just a few weeks before the start of the preseason. All the veteran head coach did not was what wasn’t there. Either through graduation or transfer four of the Vikings’ top five scorers last season’s 13-13 team were gone leaving Boyce with a collection of largely unknown players....

This is story No. 3 for this week (and the first Athlete of the Week for the winter sports season). File photos of Paz-Garcia were taken by me in Dec. of 2023. But with her knees feeling healthy and standout forward Brooke Harper sidelined with her own injuries, Paz-Garcia has not only returned to the starting lineup, but made the most of the unexpected opportunity....

Mayor Doyle: As you are aware, there was a two-alarm fire on the morning of Friday, Dec. 6, 2024. The fire was at 56 Hamilton Ave. That home belonged to my aunt Mary Beth, who she shared with her longtime boyfriend Martin Wilson. Unfortunately, both persons were victims to the fire and the house that has been in our family for over 60 years appears to have severe structural damage and will more than likely have to razed. ...

THE OBSERVER NEWSPAPER has published every week, without interruption, since its inception as The Arlington Observer on May 14, 1887. What was once a single-sheet of news has flourished into a tabloid-format newspaper that covers 8 towns — Kearny, Harrison, East Newark, North Arlington, Lyndhurst, Nutley, Belleville and Bloomfield.
The newspaper offers many ways for businesses to showcase themselves, including in print, on the web, via social media and through video sponsorships. As the times have changed, so, too, has The Observer.
We were among the first newspapers in the country to offer a website back in the mid-1990s thanks to the constant-forward thinking of our late-owner Anthony Tortoreti. We were among the first weekly newspapers to offer podcasts and audio in 2007.
And we are among the few weekly newspapers offering live video news — and live video opportunities for advertisers.
Visit our website at www.theobserver.com and be sure to like our social media pages — including here on Facebook -- for constant updates to stories and more. We can also be reached at (201) 991-1600. So if it’s a classified you are looking for, call right away.
