Begun in 1879, ʻIolani Palace was designed in a unique style known as “American Florentine.” This style combines features of Italian Renaissance architecture with elements of Hawaiian design, making the Palace the only building in the world constructed in this style. Three architects—Thomas J. Baker, Charles J. Wall, and Isaac Moore—contributed to the Palace, with Baker's designs primarily shaping the building. Constructed of brick with concrete facing, the large structure features four corner towers, two center towers, and double lānai (roofed, open-sided verandas) encircling the first and second floors.

Considered one of the finest palaces in the world at the time, ʻIolani Palace boasted indoor plumbing, electric lighting, an early telephone system, and elaborate decorations and furnishings.

To learn more and hear stories about ʻIolani Palace and the monarchs who once walked its celebrated halls, take a guided tour led by a volunteer docent: www.iolanipalace.org/visit/tours-admission/guided-tours
