One year ago today I had my first of 3 amputations! I had multiple blood clots in my lower leg and foot, and after stints returned the blood flow, I developed compartment syndrome. My foot had been ischemic for so long it was evident amputation was the only option. People are surprised to learn that I wasn’t ever angry about losing my foot. I immediately shifted my thought process to what the plan would be to get healthy and take on this new challenge. Little did I know that August 22, 2022 would only be day 4 of a 50 day journey in the hospital that would involve multiple additional surgeries, amputations, other health complications and pain that I never knew was possible.
I never lost hope though. My Lord and Savior carried me through the entire ordeal and I was blessed beyond measure by an army of family, friends, and strangers love and prayers. I had one of the best medical, nursing, and rehab teams ever assembled as well.
Someone asked me if I could go back in time and prevent this from happening, would I? The honest answer is “NO.” I know God’s plan for my life is perfect. Even going through hell for 50 days, and then months of rehab and learning to walk again, I’ve learned more about myself and what I’m capable of, that I may have never tapped into otherwise!
If you are facing amputation, or are in the process of recovering, don’t give up! Get up and fight like hell! You’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish if you keep grinding it out. Don’t allow yourself to fall victim to the doubts or negative self talk! Make a goal each day, and go crush it! Once you hit that goal, make a new one and crush it too! I promise when you get done, you’ll be amazed how far you’ve come!
