Juneau is an amazing community. People are regularly reaching out asking how can they help emergency responders and nurses.

The #1 thing responders need is people to take this threat seriously. Take Social Distance seriously.
The only tool we have is slow the spread through preventative measures. Hunker Down and stay home.
21 KNOWN cases in Alaska at last count. As testing ramps up more cases will be identified.

Protect yourself and your family. That will help responders and nurses. 🙏🏼 emoji hands only go so far. Tangible actions, hunkering down and social distancing mean the most to every one of us.
Stay Safe Juneau, we have your back.

Can someone send 1,000 bouquets to my house then?

O Christmas Tree, o Christmas tree. During the month of December, a household may remove one evergreen tree per year from municipal land designated by the Christmas Tree Policy: http://bit.ly/2rckQnn. Trees must be cut at ground level and discarded branches must be scattered.

Beginning the week of September 9, 2019, the City and Borough of Juneau Water Utility will begin flushing the water distribution system. Work is scheduled to begin downtown, working north to the hospital, crossing over to Douglas, then on to the Lemon Creek area, proceeding to the Mendenhall Valley, and then out to the Tee Harbor area. This work will continue over the next few months.

Work will occur between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, and will be tentatively completed by the end of October.

Customers may encounter water discoloration or minor disruptions in service. To clear the discoloration, first wait until the work crew leaves the area, then run the cold water tap (preferably in your bathtub) until the water runs clear.

Please watch for crews working in the roadway, use caution, and obey traffic controls.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

For more information, contact the CBJ Utilities Administration at 586-0393. For after-hours emergencies, call 586-2165.

The Juneau International Airport is conducting a full-scale emergency disaster exercise at the airport today from 9 am to about 1:30 pm. It will involve many emergency response agencies and volunteers role-playing as injured passengers in a simulated aircraft accident. The public should keep in mind this is only an exercise and not a cause for alarm. The exercise won't disrupt normal airport operations or scheduled flights.

The parking lot of the Airport D**e Trail/Emergency Vehicle Access Road is closed from 8 am to 1 pm to accommodate parking for volunteers taking part in the exercise. The trail will remain open.

The exercise will take place in the runway area. Several CBJ entities, including Capital City Fire Rescue, Juneau Police Department, and Bartlett Regional Hospital, as well as outside agencies, like Red Cross, are participating. The exercise will involve increased activity on the airport grounds, like emergency and airport vehicles with flashing lights and sirens. The exercise may involve a live burn simulated fire that could generate a temporary cloud of black smoke.

Again, this is only an exercise and not a cause for alarm.

The annual Gastineau Channel July 4th fireworks show will go on as scheduled, according to Capital City Fire Rescue Chief Rich Etheridge. The use of personal fireworks, however, are banned in Juneau to comply with the Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office’s immediate suspension on the sale and use of fireworks across much of Alaska due to heightened fire danger (http://bit.ly/2ROeljE)

“We ask that people in Juneau adhere to the ban on personal use fireworks. In Juneau, we’re not used to thinking about outdoor fire safety. Although we live in a rainforest, the threat of wildland fire is a very real danger. We are in the middle of a drought and that changes the dynamics of our rainforest,” Etheridge said.

The July 4th fireworks show, which takes place the night of July 3rd, is run by volunteer group Juneau Festival Association. Etheridge says the show is permitted by the City and Borough of Juneau, has gone through a separate permitting process by the state, and has several safeguards, including a pyrotechnician’s license, insurance policies, and approved detailed plans regarding fireworks height and fallout. Both the State Fire Marshal’s Office and state Division of Forestry are aware of the permitted show.

In contrast, use of personal fireworks in Juneau won’t be permitted during the July 4th holiday and into the foreseeable future. On June 27, the Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office implemented an immediate suspension on the sale and use of fireworks across much of Alaska, including Juneau, citing high to very high fire danger and a shortage of firefighting resources in the state. “… the safety of Alaskans and visitors is paramount. The suspension of the sale and use of fireworks will assist in protecting life and property,” said State Fire Marshal Richard Boothby. The State Fire Marshal requires CBJ to comply with this ban on personal use fireworks.

For more information, contact Capital City Fire/Rescue at 586-5322.

JPD & CCFR Training Event – Today on Whittier Street

Until around 4pm today, staff from the Police and Fire Departments will be conducting a joint training exercise at the Public Safety Building on Whittier Street.

Officers will be simulating deployment and entry into buildings for situations such as serving high risk search warrants, arrest warrants or when a suspect or active shooter is armed in a location that is fortified or has hostages. The team will be breaking doors and windows and the training will include the controlled use of small explosive devices (flashbangs) that create noise and light.

This training is designed to boost collaboration between CBJ law enforcement and emergency medical personnel. The training activities will be conducted inside and outside of the building.

Alaska Electric Light & Power will be closing the Flume trail on April 1 through October for major repairs.

Here’s more info from AEL&P: “The Gold Creek Flume, built in the early 1900’s, is showing its age. Shifting and settling of the structure has caused leakage, reduced efficiency, and raised safety concerns. Due to this, AEL&P will be refurbishing the flume in 2019 and 2020. AEL&P’s goal is to maintain this valued, historic project while ensuring safe and reliable conditions that allow us to provide renewable energy to Juneau customers, as well as allow CBJ Parks and Rec to preserve recreational access for you and your families well into the future.

Between the months of April and September, the flume will be CLOSED to recreational access while repairs are underway. To ensure everyone’s safety, please observe all notices and stay clear of all closed areas.

We greatly appreciate your understanding as we work to ensure that the flume trail continues to serve the Juneau community’s needs for many years to come.” https://www.aelp.com/Safety/Flume-Closure

In this situation, sharing is not caring.

On behalf of Bartlett Regional Hospital Infection Prevention, those with flu or flu-like symptoms are asked to avoid visiting patients in the hospital until further notice. Parents are asked to not bring children age 12 and under to visit patients as well. This special announcement is due to current record levels of flu activity. Please do not visit anyone at the hospital unless you feel healthy and are not at risk of spreading the influenza virus.
Thank you for your consideration.

Juneau Animal Control and Protection officers will be at Project Homeless Connect, which is taking place on Wednesday, Jan. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center. They’ll be offering pet services and resources, like food, leashes, collars, dog coats, low cost spay/neuter applications and free microchipping for pets whose owners experience homelessness. To help make this possible, they're accepting donations of canned food or new bags of pet food, which can be dropped off at Juneau Animal Rescue (formerly Gastineau Humane Society).

Other donations such as gift cards, new white and wool socks, hats and gloves (adult men and women sizes) are also needed for the event. These items can be dropped off at Gruening Park Apartments, 1800 Northwood Drive. Please contact Tamara Rowcroft or Shari Partin at 780-4500 with any questions.
