Happy Birthday Mary Todd Lincoln!

Mary Todd Lincoln was the wife of President Abraham Lincoln and served as the First Lady of the United States from 1861 to 1865. She was born Mary Ann Todd on December 13, 1818, in Lexington, Kentucky. She married Abraham Lincoln in 1842.

The trauma this woman went through, losing several children, a carriage accident that left her with chronic pain, and the big one of being there when her husband was assassinated. MTL came from a southern family and hosted her brother, a confederate soldier, at the white house during the war. She also spent a ton of money on decorations and clothes to feel like she belonged in the DC set. We'll learn more about her together! If any of our first ladies deserves a hug, it's Mary.

After her husband died in 1865, Mary struggled financially and with mental health issues, which led to a period of institutionalization. She died on July 16, 1882, at 63, in Springfield, IL.

(Lincoln himself left Springfield to go to DC to start his first term as President and never went back to his hometown)
