Come along with us for a magnificent trip of early fall colors on the Big Piney River in Missouri. Sorry we were delayed… we are finally getting this released as our focus was in other directions due to disasters in our area. Our whole crew was able to make this trip, and it was even more important to us as the first one we have been able to take since Brian’s mother recently passed. This river is a visual delight, so please enjoy this trip with us in memory of her. (Stick around at the end for some nighttime film fun!)

This trip is close to home and highlights one of the region's unsung rivers, the Powell (Virginia & Tennessee). This river has been recommended to us for quite some time by friends and locals. So, we decided to venture out and experience this surprisingly interesting waterway. Fish, oh yes! Calm, slow-moving waters, check. Campsites, yes. However, may require a little compromise and work. In short, this river is definitely worth a trip!

For this winter trip, we decided to return to the Current River in Missouri to paddle the final section we've yet to see. This section begins in Van Burn Mo and concludes with our takeout in Doniphan Mo. Below Doniphan, we were told the river changes dramatically and becomes primarily farmland with far fewer features compared to its upper sections. The beginning of this trip passes through sections of the National Park, but the majority will take us through areas of private land and national forests. Nevertheless, it was still stunning. We had to be careful with our camp selections, however, as we observed some private property postings along the way and toward the last half of the trip. With this being said, there were still several areas offering awesome campsites. We hope you enjoy this one!

This trip was filmed prior to a life-changing experience. Little did Brenda and I know what would come shortly after our return home. While editing this project, it occurred to me how quickly circumstances can change, altering your paradigm completely. It has been said again and again that life is short. One needs to live in the moment and take nothing for granted. Although often said, it is very easily forgotten. Sometimes, it takes a stark reminder to appreciate what is important. Family, friends, our faith……those we love and trust, are most valuable. This river was an incredible gift to paddle, although I didn’t realize it at the time. Looking back to just October, it occurred to me how my perspective and appreciation for all those in my life had changed in just a few months. All rivers we paddle hold significance for us in one way or another. This one will definitely be a permanent memory. It is not as spoken of as the Current or Buffalo, but this river is most certainly worth a visit!

We decided to return to one of our favorite rivers for a multitude of reasons. Specifically, we wanted to share this incredible area with one of our many friends, Jalil. Jalil has traveled all over the world, from Antarctica to Africa in search of experiences and adventure. However, his experience in a kayak on moving water was limited. When deciding on a river, the Greenbrier became the perfect choice and proved to appeal to Jalil's sense of adventure. Although, our trip didn't conclude without some mishaps along the way! We strongly recommend running this section ABOVE 2.5 feet at the Buckeye gauge. However, if you are up for a bit of a challenge and a partial hike at times..... go for it! Our experiences on this river have always been unique, to say the least.
