Police debunk viral serial killer rumor circulating in N.J. town

Police in Somerset County have debunked viral social media rumors about a serial killer residing in Franklin Township.

“The Franklin Township Police Department is actively addressing and dispelling unfounded rumors circulating on social media regarding the existence of a possible serial killer in the area,” police said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Franklin Township Police Department said the rumor has caused unnecessary panic in the town.

The U.S. Postal Service just hiked its rates. How will it affect your mail?

The USPS announced the price increase in November 2024 that it will introduce “new competitive” prices for 2025, meaning that some services have increased in price.

Shipping Services are going up 3.2% for Priority Mail service while Priority Mail Express service will increase 3.9% for USPS Ground Advantage and 9.2% for Parcel Select, according to the USPS.

United flight makes emergency landing in Newark for mechanical issue

A United Airlines flight bound for Puerto Rico made an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport Saturday after a report of a mechanical issue, officials with the Federal Aviation Administration said.

United Airlines Flight 2143 returned safely to Newark airport at about 11:40 a.m. Saturday after the crew reported a possible mechanical issue, the FAA said.

The flight was heading to Puerto Rico but was forced to turn back, officials said.

When an abandoned mineshaft beneath Interstate 80 in Morris County collapsed the morning after Christmas, closing the eastbound side of the highway for four days, everyone took notice.

No vehicles crashed and no one was injured when the remains of the long-abandoned mine crumbled. But, for many, the sinkhole provided a sudden, alarming awareness that New Jersey is home to long-closed mines that can, and sometimes do, instantly collapse into a crater without warning.

A long-abandoned mine caused a sinkhole on I-80 last month, highlighting the dangers lurking just beneath the surface across New Jersey.

I was blacklisted by N.J. healthcare network after I resigned, doctor says in lawsuit

A New Jersey anesthesiologist has filed a federal lawsuit against Hackensack Meridian Health, Envision Healthcare, and two of their executives, alleging a coordinated campaign of retaliation against him after he resigned.

Dr. Hani Hanna, a pediatric anesthesiologist with over 15 years of experience, claims in the lawsuit that Hackensack Meridian Health and its affiliates fabricated evidence, issued a false suspension, and submitted misleading information to the National Practitioner Data Bank after he resigned from Hackensack University Medical Center in 2022.

The doctor said he resigned to escape a hostile work environment and other alleged abuses, according to the lawsuit.

The pediatric anesthesiologist says healthcare company officials fabricated evidence and submitted misleading information about him to a national doctors' database.

Powerball ticket worth $1M sold in N.J. for weekend drawing

A Powerball ticket worth $1 million was purchased in New Jersey for Saturday’s lottery drawing, officials said.

The New Jersey Lottery will disclose where the lucky, second-prize Powerball ticket was sold later Monday.

It matched five numbers but not the Powerball and was the only $1 million ticket bought nationwide.

No one across the country hit Saturday’s $238 million jackpot, pushing the top prize for Monday night’s drawing to an estimated $263 million with a cash option of $115.3 million.

Monday's Powerball jackpot is worth $285 million after no ticket matched all the winning numbers Saturday.

N.J. police spent $1M on controversial training despite warnings

A year after a private police training firm came under fire over its alleged use of racist, misogynistic and sexually explicit language in classes attended by hundreds of cops, a state watchdog reported that nearly 400 New Jersey law enforcement agencies paid more than $1 million over five years for the controversial seminars.

State comptroller said firm helped officers hide their attendance at its courses. "The problem is bigger than we previously reported."

Thousands flee as wildfires burn out of control in and around Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES — California firefighters battled wind-whipped wildfires that tore across the Los Angeles area, destroying homes, clogging roadways as tens of thousands fled and straining resources as the fires burned uncontained early Wednesday.

The flames from a fire that broke out Tuesday evening near a nature preserve in the inland foothills northeast of LA spread so rapidly that staff at a senior living center had to push dozens of residents in wheelchairs and hospital beds down the street to a parking lot.

Strong winds and dry conditions are to blame for the raging fires in Southern Californai.

These were N.J.‘s safest hospitals in 2024. See where your hospital ranks.

Hospitals in New Jersey rank fifth best in the nation for protecting patients from injuries and medical errors and preventing infections and other incidents that may leave them sicker than before they were admitted, according to the latest Leapfrog Hospital Safety report card.

New Jersey slipped from 3rd best in the spring to 5th best, but the number of hospitals earning an “A” rose by one, to 31 out of 67 graded.

Not every hospital gets top grades even though New Jersey does better than most states.

N.J. weather: Up to 2 inches of snow today. Latest forecast for more powerful snowstorm Monday.

The first of two snowstorms is expected to drop a coating to 2 inches of snow on southern New Jersey Friday afternoon and evening before attention turns to a second more powerful winter storm that could include widespread snowfall accumulations Monday.

The National Weather Service has not yet issued a snow forecast map for the Monday storm, but noted that snowfall totals are likely to be in the 2 to 4 inch range with some banding of snow that remains difficult to predict a few days out.

The winter storm in the forecast for Monday is expected to bring more widespread snow accumulations across New Jersey with up to 6 inches expected.

Legendary singer who became one of country music’s top stars was a ‘Jersey boy’ at heart

Eddie Rabbitt grew up in East Orange and became a country music superstar in Nashville, but never stopped being a “Jersey Boy.”

One of his lesser-known songs endures, more than a quarter-century after his death, as the tale of his improbable rise. It namechecks the Jersey Shore, Palisades, Pulaski Skyway, Clairmont Diner, Hurricane Bar in Newark and the “streets of Old East Orange,” not the usual fare of country music.

He went from singing at the Hurricane Bar in Newark to hitting it big in Nashville.

Happy New Year, New Jersey! These new state laws will take effect in 2025.

It’s a new year, New Jersey. And that means we’re getting some new laws.

Beginning this year, state-regulated health insurance companies will have to decide more quickly — within 24 hours and 72 hours — whether they will cover a test or treatment recommended by a patient’s doctor.

Anyone under 21 learning to drive will have to put in 50 hours of practice behind the wheel before they get a license in the state.

Freezing rain in the northern half of New Jersey could create “slippery and hazardous” sidewalks, roads, and bridges Friday evening into Saturday morning, according to the latest forecast.
