A message from Jeff Davis Parish School Board Superintendent John Hall:
"Good morning,
After discusions with local authorities and a comprehensive survey of our parish roads during the night, Jeff Davis Parish Schools will have school today, May 17th, 2024. With the assistance of the Jeff Davis Parish Sherrifs Office, we have provided a list of roads that we feel are unsafe to drive on.
We have instructed our bus operators not to travel down any road that has traditionally flooded in the past as a safety precaution. We don't want to place them in a situation where they have to back up on a long road once they find it flooded. Our bus operators will be communicating with our schools and providing the schools with any additional roads that may not be passable. If your children can't be picked up due to flooding or you can't bring them to school due to flooding or property damage, contact the school, and your children will receive an excused absence. If you are affected by a power outage and your children can't attend school, call your school office and notify them of your situation, and your child will receive an excused absence.
Any employees that are flooded in, do not attempt to drive through water on the road and contact your school immediately and let them know your status. Our bus operators have always kept student safety as the highest priority, and we trust their judgement this morning to do what's best for their riders. Please be patient this morning and know that country routes may be delayed even if your road is not flooded. As of this morning, it seems that most in town/city routes are passable.
It appears our parish received less damage and rainfall than our surrounding areas. But, there are still a few areas with power outages, localized damage, and flooding. During the day, we may also see roads in the southern part of the parish that are currently not flooded become impassable as water drains. We will be monitoring any changes throughout the day.
Thank you for your understanding. This has definitely been an interesting month. I believe we have experienced many events this year that have shown us who we are as a parish and our ability to handle adversity. Be safe.
