If you are at Green Key Beach, you can look out into the Gulf of Mexico and see several stilt homes which were originally built to provide shelter to fisherman and a place to store mullet catch. According to www.fivay.org/stilt_houses.html, it is not known exactly went the homes were built, but there was a newspaper article that claims that William John Baillie Jr claims to have built the first one. An article by the Tampa Tribune on Sept. 26, 1974 said that before October 1968 there were 24 stilt houses and the same month Hurricane Gladys destroyed most of them but some were rebuilt. To this day there are only 9 remaining stilt homes. To learn more about the history of the Pasco Stilt Homes, visit www.fivay.org/stilt_houses.html.
