"Meant For More" As most of you know, my full time job is being a youth pastor. I love speaking at our church and the many opportunities that I get to speak to people all over the U.S, Europe and Asia.

As Easter weekend is upon us, I wanted to share a message I gave to hundreds of people at our "Meant For More" event a few years ago. Even if your life is busy right now, I encourage you to watch this. I promise you, you won't get to the end of this video and say, "Well, that wasn't worth it." It will make you think about how you were meant for more than what our world offers you and will give you a new perspective this Easter weekend.

As a personal favor to me I am asking you give it a look and then share this video with others! Happy Easter to all of you from me and my family. Know that all of you are loved and appreciated!

"Baby Malachi" Rejoice with us over the birth of grandson number FOUR!! We love him sooooo much already!

Our Daughter-in-law Michaela writes:

"Praise God from who all blessings flow! šŸ’• Malachi Michael Powers was born at home at 12:13 pm on February 11th, weighing a whopping 9 lbs 13 oz., and measuring 22 inches long!

His first name means "messenger of God" and his middle name means "who is like God". His middle namesake is so special to us as he's named after both his grandpas, Mike Ginter & Michael T. Powers and now shares a middle name with my older brother, William Ginter, and Connor's older brother, Caleb Michael Powers, as well!

He apparently wanted to compete with his brother for most dramatic birth story šŸ˜…. My water broke in the kitchen while we were making breakfast at 8 am then contractions started a little after 8:30 am! Our wonderful midwife (Linda) and her student (Miranda) arrived around 10:30 am after delivering 2 other babies in the last 16 hours šŸ¤Æ! Unfortunately, Malachi got stuck on his way out and had a shoulder dystocia. Praise God for Linda and Miranda for safely repositioning him and me to get him out and with NO tearing!

Ezra's been absolutely incredible. I seriously can't get over this kid. Through my more mild contractions, as Connor was setting up the birthing pool, Ezra, on his own, started rubbing my back, hugging, and kissing me. With Ezra still being so young (a little under 16 months) we had no idea what to expect. He's honestly been such a good helper. Ezra will try and soothe Malachi if he's crying and brought us a diaper for him when we were changing him today. šŸ˜

I'm just sitting here, holding my babies, and just cannot believe this is our life. We are so blessed."

"The Handiwork of God" I love this snowflake photo from one of our trips up north. My eyes are instantly drawn to the intricate snowflake that is reaching out from the pine needles, but I can also see many individual snowflakes all through the picture.

A new year is dawning. All of us have a blank page before us just waiting to be written on. Are we going to live for ourselves or are we going to live for Jesus Christ?

"For we are Godā€™s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10

When we live our lives according to His purpose, we affect the lives of those around us for eternity.

"He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8

I will have a chance to do some VHS or 8mm tape transfers in the next month or so. If you have a bunch of tapes laying around that you can no longer watch because you don't have a VCR anymore, I can transfer them to a digital video file or DVD for you. It would be fun for you to watch them as a family over the holidays!

Cost is: $10 for a tape an hour or less. $15 for tapes between 60-120 minutes. Best part of the transfer process is that we only charge you for what we can get on a 2 hour DVD. Meaning if you have four 30 minute tapes, you don't have to pay $40. We will combine them into one 2 hour DVD for only $15.

Extra copies of your master are only $5 per DVD so you can have inexpensive copies for each member of your family if you want.

"The Old Rugged Cross" I took this photo when I was on a hike on the trails at Peace Park here in Janesville. It is the rusted remains of an old barbed wire fence post. I am always looking for things that catch my eye and the shape of the cross definitely made me stop. Thought it would be a good photo to share for Good Friday.

"What would it have been like to stand upon that hill, gazing up at the man on the cross who did not have the appearance of a man? I can see the blood and tears mingling on His cracked and disfigured face; the muscles of His body quaking and trembling with agony.

The roaring of earth-tremoring thunder. The lightning shattering the molten sky into fragments. The wails that hang in the stagnant air; the laughs of scorn that rumble and collide against the rest of the chaos. The enemy laughs with triumph. The Jews, the Roman soldiers, the multitudes that wanted Him dead blast their verbal trumpets as they bathe in their victory.

I can only look on, the tears burning my face like liquid fire. "My sin holds him there. He is dying a death He does not deserve because of ME." The mockery from the people around me erupts in my ears. And yet, as the world looks on, watching the bleeding fragments of a man as He hangs upon the splintered wood of the cross, God is satisfied.

While His enemies thrash the air with their gloating shouts, they are bringing about what God intended all along. It is finished. God has won the victory. And the world will never be the same." -- Julia Zwayne

If you haven't read this story by my wife Kristi yet, you need to take some time to do so. It has been shared over 3,500 times and been read by over 625,000 people. It doesn't surprise me at all that this story resonates so much with those who love sports.

This is what every coach would want from their players and parents! Aeris, thank you for showing the world what being part of a team is all about!

"Wisconsin is Closed" We are sitting at 47 degrees below zero with the windchill here in Wisconsin. The kind of cold that can cause frostbite in mere minutes.

Yesterday afternoon I did my first experiment with trying to take photos of bubbles as they freeze. I did get a few good photos, but it was quite the bone-chilling experience. And this was when the windchill temperature was a balmy 20 below zero!

The bubbles froze and popped so fast that I only was able to get a shot or two of about 10% of the frozen little spheres.

In those few minutes, my hands got so cold I actually scared myself. When I went in the house to warm up the pain of the returning blood circulation to my fingers was excruciating.

But it was worth it to get photos like this that show the amazing design that God has put into ice crystals!

ā€œIt was one of those bitter mornings when the whole of nature is shiny, brittle, and hard, like crystal. The trees, decked out in frost, seem to have sweated ice; the earth resounds beneath oneā€™s feet; the tiniest sounds carry a long way in the dry air; the blue sky is bright as a mirror, and the sun moves through space in icy brilliance, casting on the frozen world rays which bestow no warmth upon anything.ā€ -- Guy de Maupassant, Bel-Ami, 1885

I have been producing videos since 1990. Nothing I have ever made can hold a candle to the video that Caleb just made for our church this past weekend on the topic of Christians being martyred. Not only did he edit this together, but he wrote the script and the music for it. So very proud. Caleb, may God continue to use the gifts and abilities he has given you to touch the lives of countless others!

"Christmas Memories" I took this photo of the outside of the cabin that we stayed in last Christmas.

We had a lot of time to just relax and take in the solitude of a forest covered in snow. It also gave me some time to reflect on some Christmas memories...

My favorite Christmas memory as a child was getting back out of bed after everyone in the family had fallen asleep and sneaking downstairs to our living room. I would plug the lights back in for the Christmas tree and then wind up the little music box on the back of our nativity set.

It was an old nativity set. Back when each piece was carved out of wood and they were made to last. I can still see each figure in my mind.

Once the box was wound up, the most beautiful sound emanated from it. There is music and then there is the distinct sound of the tinkling notes of a music box...I don't know if Silent Night was already my favorite Christmas song or if it became my favorite because of the nativity set.

All I know is that I never felt closer to God as a child than when I was listening to that song and looking at the pretty lights on the tree while the whole world slept.

Silent night! holy night!
All is calm all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace!

Silent night! holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia
Christ the Savior is born!

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

So what are your favorite Christmas memories? Feel free to share in the comments section so the rest of us can reminisce with you!

"Incredible Design" A walk through the woods is always enjoyable. All of your senses become involved. The clean fresh scent of the pine needles combines with the sweet earthy aroma of the fallen leaves as they complete their life-cycle and mix back into the ground.

What has made it more enjoyable for me is taking my camera with me to look for and capture scenes like this. Scenes that I previously would have walked on by with just a passing glance.

The fungus that this leaf rests upon is called Stereum ostrea. The more common name is "False Turkey Tail," since it mimics a true Turkey Tail mushroom. (More on Turkey Tail fungus in the future!)

I just love discovering the different patterns that God put into his design. It constantly reminds me that to have a design you must have a Designer. I see it in the veins of a leaf, the crystal structure of a snowflake or the many varieties of mushrooms that I can discover in just 20 minutes out in the woods!

This winter, instead of wishing the cold to go away, find ways to appreciate each season that we experience by noticing the little things that we are in too big a hurry to see!

ā€œSince what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world Godā€™s invisible qualitiesā€”his eternal power and divine natureā€”have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.ā€ Romans 1:19,20

Review of Heart Touchers by New York Times Best-Selling author Joan Wester Anderson

Professional writers get very irritable when someone informs us that he is planning to write a book "whenever I have the time" or comments that it must be great to "lie around the house, waiting for inspiration." Such folks have no idea how hard writing is, and how often we squeeze assignments in around the demands of another job (to say nothing of a family) or re-think our career choice: on bad days, even elevator repair or medical school seem preferable.

Then, once in awhile, we meet a newcomer ready and eager to master all he can, knowing that the learning will require sacrifice and rejection, who brings to his craft that certain combination of emotion, sincerity and logic and isn't afraid to let it show, who writes because not to write would be worse--and we recognize him. We are us, and now he is us. Such a person is Michael T. Powers.

For the past year I have been enjoying Michael's pieces on his web site. They are warm, funny, touching and filled with the family and spiritual values that make him such a solid man. My favorite changes from week to week; sometimes I think he will never surpass When Lightning Bugs Look Like Fireworks, but then I re-read Taking Off the Mask and again, enjoy the goosebumps. How did this young person get to be so good, I wonder? Not just at writing, but at life! People who worry about the moral development of today's twenty- and thirty-somethings ought to read his parenting pieces, his stories of coaching teenage basketball players. They would be truly consoled and encouraged.

Fortunately, that's something we can all do. Michael's collection of stories Heart Touchers is finally here. I can recommend it wholeheartedly, and am looking forward to yet another read. Michael, welcome to the "lying around the house" club. May Heart Touchers be only the beginning.

--Joan Wester Anderson New York Times Best-Selling Author of 15 books including Where Angels Walk and Forever Young, the authorized biography of screen legend Loretta Young.
