Nehemiah is a great book. It shows us God at work in and through His people. It shows us what a privilege it is to use who God has made us, how He has gifted us, and what He has given us for the sake of His mission. As we come now to Nehemiah chapter 8, the wall is already complete… but the story is far from over. Our passage today gives us a glimpse into who we are as the people of God… we are loved children to whom our Father has lovingly spoken through His Word. Nehemiah 8 helps us remember this beautiful and defining characteristic of being one of God’s kids… we are a family/people of the Book!
Today, I want to extend three challenges to you – praying that the Spirit will use Nehemiah 8 to draw each of us deeper into relationship with Jesus by drawing us again and again into His Word.
Challenge - Pray for your heart to desire to hear from God
Nehemiah 8:1 – All the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel.
The people of God came together because they wanted to hear from God. They didn’t wait to be summoned by Nehemiah or Ezra. Instead, THEY sent for Ezra so that they could hear from God though His Word! What a powerful picture of a heart that senses the privilege of being in relationship with God. What a powerful picture of a heart that sees God’s self-revelation for the treasure it is! May we too so love and desire the One who has loved us first, that we come to meet with Him in His Word time and time again!

1. Verse 1 – Rebuilding the wall wasn’t the end. It was the beginning. There was still work to be done. Nehemiah wanted to make sure that things would run smoothly. He wanted to make sure that things wouldn’t regress. There are times to build and there are times to preserve what has been built. Imagine how foolish it would be if after all of that work rebuilding the wall a tactical mistake allowed the enemy to come in to the city and defeat them. Nehemiah continues to organize and delegate and make sure that every detail is attended to.

2. He puts wise leaders in charge – He appoints leaders that he knows and trusts. He appoints leaders who fear God and are men of integrity (this is what Paul also commanded in 1 Timothy and Titus about appointing elders.) He

3. He sets rules for the opening and closing of the gates and appoints guards – If one gate was left open at the wrong time or if one spot was unguarded all of their work may have been done for nothing. Nehemiah understood that their achievements and past victories would not guarantee that the enemy would stop trying to destroy them. He understood that his enemy would persevere. He surveyed the wall to find the weakness to fix it before. Now his enemy would survey the wall to find the weakness to attack.

Application: We should be alert and aware. We should understand our weaknesses and take appropriate measures to protect ourselves from temptation in those areas. For example?

4. Nehemiah called the people together – God put this idea in his heart. We will see the result of this idea in chapter 8. Worshiping God is a community affair. Both in the Old Testament and now we need to fellowship with other believers. This is the public side of our faith. We can both receive and give encouragement to others. We can challenge each other. We can both receive teaching and teach others. Two are stronger than one. Together we are stronger than we are by ourselves. Be sure you regularly fellowship with and serve God together with other believers.

Many of the families made the decision to go back to Jerusalem. This could not have been an easy decision. Most of them were born and raised in the Babylonian Empire. This was “home” to them in a sense. The people they knew were there. Their houses were there. They had friends there. They had careers and jobs and possessions. They had security. Back in Jerusalem they wouldn’t know what to expect. Certainly there would be dangers both on the way and when they arrived back. They would have to start their lives completely from scratch. They would face difficulties and opposition. But they made the choices to go because God stirred their hearts. God put this desire in their hearts and they responded. They realized that Babylon wasn’t really their home. It wasn’t the land God had promised to them. Judah was their home. This is similar to the concept that we are also aliens in a foreign land and our citizenship is in heaven.

Releasing a single is the quickest and easiest way to start your journey as an artist, get your music heard and pave your first steps in the music world.

But as we all know, the music industry has changed - drastically - and is continuing to evolve. Which means for new artists entering the playing field, there’s now a number of things worth considering before releasing a single in 2024

Singles are a whole lot easier to put out than albums, the trouble is - everyone's doing it, and there’s about 24,000 songs released across the world every. Single. Day.

That’s where the importance of your release & promotion strategy comes in, in order to cut through the noise, get the industry’s attention & make YOURS the single that stands out.

Chapter 5
How bravely Nehemiah, as a wise and faithful governor, stood upon his guard against the attacks of enemies abroad, we read in the foregoing chapter. Here we have him no less bold and active to redress grievances at home, and, having kept them from being destroyed by their enemies, to keep them from destroying one another. Here is,

I. The complaint which the poor made to him of the great hardships which the rich (of whom they were forced to borrow money) put upon them, (v. 1-5).
II. The effectual course which Nehemiah took both to reform the oppressors and to relieve the oppressed (v. 6-13).
III. The good example which he himself, as governor, set them of compassion and tenderness (v. 14-19).
Neh 5:1-5

We have here the tears of the oppressed, which Solomon considered, Eccl. 4:1. Let us consider them as here they are dropped before Nehemiah, whose office it was, as governor, to deliver the poor and needy, and rid them out of the hand of the wicked oppressors, Ps. 82:4. Hard times and hard hearts made the poor miserable.

I. The times they lived in were hard. There was a dearth of corn (v. 3), probably for want of rain, with which God had chastised their neglect of his house (Hag. 1:9-11) and the non-payment of their church-dues, Mal. 3:9, 10. Thus foolish sinful men bring God's judgments upon themselves, and then fret and complain of them. When the markets are high, and provisions scarce and dear, the poor soon feel from it, and are pinched by it. Blessed be God for the mercy, and God deliver us from the sin, of fulness of bread, Eze. 16:49. That which made the scarcity here complained of the more grievous was that their sons and their daughters were many, v. 2. The families that were most necessitous were most numerous; here were the mouths, but where was the meat? Some have estates and no children to inherit them; others have children and no estates to leave them. Those who have both have reason to be thankful; those who have neither may the more easily be content. Those who have great families and little substance must learn to live by faith in God's providence and promise; and those who have little families and great substance must make their abundance a supply for the wants of others. But this was not all: as corn was dear, so the taxes were high; the king's tribute must be paid, v. 4. This mark of their captivity still remained upon them. Perhaps it was a poll-money that was required, and then, their sons and their daughters being many, it rose the higher. The more they had to maintain (a hard case!) the more they had to pay. Now, it seems, they had not wherewithal of their own to buy corn and pay taxes, but were necessitated to borrow. Their families came poor out of Babylon; they had been at great expense in building them houses, and had not yet got up their strength when these new burdens came upon them. The straits of poor housekeepers who make hard shift to get an honest livelihood, and sometimes want what is fitting for them and their families, are well worthy the compassionate consideration of those who either with their wealth or with their power are in a capacity to help them.

When you face adversity, don’t give up! (Galatians 6:9)

Nehemiah prays against his enemies – What do you think of his prayer? First we see that Nehemiah turned to the right place with his concerns. He didn’t take revenge. He didn’t return insults. He simply prayed. He prayed to ask for God’s help. Basically he a similar prayer to the principle in Romans 12:19 “I won’t take revenge, but God please avenge us against them!” In the Old Testament the concept of grace was not as prevalent as in the New Testament. Justice was emphasized more. Basically this is a prayer for justice rather than a prayer for mercy or grace. Should we pray like this? I would answer, “no” because we have been given a specific command by Jesus to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). Nehemiah had not been given this command since it is a New Testament command. The good aspect of Nehemiah’s prayer is that he puts the judgment of his enemies in God’s hands. He is not willing to take action against Sanballat and his gang, but asks God to intervene on their behalf. Application: When we are suffering injustice (perhaps from a boss, school, or government) we should turn to the Lord and ask Him to intervene on our behalf. It is right to ask God to intervene for us to give us justice (see: the persevering widow in Luke 18).

Verse 6 – Nehemiah didn’t just pray. That was their first reaction to the adversity. Then they started working. The text says that they “had a mind to work.” In last week’s passage we learned that working, if doing it with the right motivation for the Lord, is a good thing. If something is worth doing, it is worth doing whole-heartedly. See Collossians 3:23-24. When God gives us a task to do, we should do it to the best of our ability. We should obey joyfully, quickly, and completely. They were able to make rapid progress on the wall because they were unified and worked hard. When we join hands together to zealously serve the Lord, He could also use us to accomplish great things. Ren duo li liang da (This is a Chinese idiom that means many hands make light work.)

Verses 7-8 – We see that the adversity the Jews faced intensified. Sanballat and Tobiah went from irritated talking and mocking to angry threats and a conspiracy to attack the city. Once the walls were finished it would be too late to mount a successful attack against the city without a much stronger force than they had. Also it is likely that they were not expecting a lot of opposition. They likely thought that the Jews’ fortitude would melt away as soon as they faced some actual loss. Sanballat and his friends are like the school bully who expects people to cower and run away and give him whatever he wants just because he scowls at them. Principle: Just because you successfully stand up to temptation or adversity the first time, doesn’t mean that is the end of it. In the Bible Satan described as an adversary and he is sometimes very persistent.

Verse 9 – Here we see Nehemiah and the people’s response to this new threat. They pray and they prepare. They were vigilant and alert. They followed the command from Peter in 1 Peter 5:8 to be alert against the attacks of the devil more than 500 years before it was even written.

Resist the devil and he will flee from you – See verse 15. See James 4:7. When their enemies saw all the measures taken against them they gave up their plan of attack and the Jews were able to focus again on building the wall.

Satan wants to stop us from doing God’s work. What obstacles are you facing against serving God? Are you facing obstacles at work? At home? In your family? In your ministry? Will you allow Satan to stop you from doing the work God has prepared for you?
