The Cathedral District is hosting Christmas on Cathedral Hill, two free walking tours on Saturday. Dec. 7 by local expert Mike Field of Modern Cities and the Jackson to explore the history and architecture of Jacksonville’s Cathedral District.

Groundwork Jacksonville is hosting an Emerald Trail Riverside Community Meeting on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Jacksonville Association of Firefighters Building (618 Stockton Street).

The meeting will allow residents to review early designs of the Emerald Trail’s Riverside Link, learn more about its route and ask questions and share feedback on these preliminary designs. Members of the design teams from HDR and SCAPE Landscape Architecture will be present.

The Jacksonville Symphony ’s holiday season kicks off this weekend on Sunday, Nov. 24 with Big Band Holiday, a jazz concert featuring members of the Jacksonville Jazz Collective.

Other concerts in this holiday series include Holiday Pops, First Coast Nutcracker, Handel’s Messiah, Holiday Brass, Organ and Percussion and the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra’s Holiday Concert.

The North Florida Land Trust celebrated its 25th anniversary at Smith Lake Preserve in Clay County on Saturday, Nov. 9. Guests got to board NFLT’s Hixon Buggy, its new trail buggy, for property tours and enjoy a half-mile hike on a special hiking trail opened exclusively for the celebration. Lunch was provided by Mission BBQ with live music provided by Remedy Tree.

Historic Avondale is looking for volunteers this Saturday, Nov. 23 to help with decorating St. Johns Avenue for the holidays, from wrapping light posts to hanging wreaths to putting out other holiday decor.

With the holiday season upon us, Riverside Avondale Preservation and Happy Medium Books Café are launching an interactive shopping experience to help support Riverside’s Park and King area merchants.

Beginning Nov. 22 and running through Dec. 20, shoppers can pick up a passport at Happy Medium Books Café and search for the elves hidden at local businesses in the Park and King District.

More than 20 small businesses in the area will have their own elves. Participants can collect a stamp for each one they find and return their completed passport to Happy Medium to be entered to win a grand prize gift bag from Park and King Merchants.

Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP) celebrated its 50th anniversary this week at a special soiree at the home of Dr. Wayne Wood, RAP founder and Jacksonville historian. The evening offered food and drinks as well as special presentations, including a performance by Jacksonville artist and performer Mal Jones.

RAP Executive Director Shannon Blankinship also announced the launch of the Riverside Avondale Preservation Legacy Endowment with the The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida. Blankinship later said the endowment was created “to ensure that [RAP] will exist in perpetuity doing the work that needs to be done specific to the current needs of the neighborhood.”

The Jacksonville Symphony ’s last classical concert of the year will feature principal cellist Alexei Romanenko, led by Music Director Courtney Lewis.

“Alexei Plays Dvořák” will feature Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No. 4, Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto and the Florida premiere of Angel Lam’s “Please let there be a paradise…”

This will be Jacksonville Symphony’s fourth Florida Blue Classical Series concert. Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 22 and 23.

The Vault at 1930 will be launching a specially curated exhibit celebrating the life of Ed Hall, one of its longtime artists and cherished friends, with a special reception on Friday, Nov. 22 from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

The exhibit will run through the end of November.

His signature acrylic paintings and cartoons will be highlighted in the exhibit.

The Vault at 1930 is located in San Marco Square at 1957 San Marco Boulevard.

The rain didn’t dampen the turnout for the Alzheimer's Association Central and North Florida Chapter’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s this past Saturday. More than 1,500 participants bore different color flowers to signify their connection to Alzeimer’s or other dementa: Blue flowers signified a loved one living with the disease; yellow denoted caregivers; purple for those walking in memory of someone; and orange in a display of solidarity in the fight against all dementia, including Alzheimer’s.

Walk participants have raised more than $300,000 has so far to “further the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association.” Donations towards the $460,000 goal can be made through Dec. 31 at alz.org/JacksonvilleWalk.
