EIFFEL TOWER REPORTEDLY BADLY NEEDS REPAIRS:

The Eiffel Tower, one of the world's most famous landmarks, is riddled with rust and in need of repairs, according to French magazine Marianne. But the report said that instead of getting those repairs done, it's being given a cosmetic paint job ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. One manager at the tower told Marianne, "It is simple, if Gustave Eiffel visited the place, he would have a heart attack." The tower is undergoing a repaint in preparation of the 2024 Olympics, the 20th time the Tower has been repainted.

13 REMAIN MISSING AFTER ITALIAN AVLANCHE THAT KILLED SEVEN:

Thirteen hikers remained missing Monday (July 4th) after an avalanche in Italy a day earlier in which seven people are known to have been killed. Eight people were injured. The avalanche of ice, snow and rocks was caused by a huge chunk of an Alpine glacier breaking off in the Dolomite Mountain range in northeastern Italy. The search was hampered yesterday by thunderstorms. The Marmolada glacier has been shrinking for decades, and scientists at the government CNR research center have said it won’t exist within 25 to 30 years.

PUTIN DECLARES VICTORY IN UKRAINE'S EASTERN LUHANSK REGION:

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared victory in Ukraine's eastern Luhansk region on Monday (July 4th), the day after Ukrainian forces withdrew from their last remaining stronghold in Luhansk in the city of Lysychansk. The Ukrainian General Staff said Russian forces were now pushing toward Siversk, Fedorivka and Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, about half of which is controlled by Russia. Luhansk and Donetsk together make up the Donbas. AP reported that a British Defense Ministry intelligence briefing yesterday said the Russian forces will, quote, "now almost certainly" switch to capturing Donestsk, where it said the conflict has been "grinding and attritional," and is unlikely to change in the coming weeks. Putin has made capturing the Donbas a key goal of the war, focusing there after failing in the attempt to take the capital of Kyiv and areas in the northeast early on after Russia's February invasion.

TWO PHILADELPHIA POLICE OFFICER SHOT DURING JULY 4TH CELEBRATION:

Two police officers were shot in Philadelphia last night (July 4th) during a Fourth of July fireworks show and concert. One officer suffered a graze wound to his forehead, and the other was shot in the shoulder. Both were treated at a hospital and released. The officers were providing security at the event on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway when shots were fired around 9:47 p.m., just before the fireworks began. Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said, "We don't know if this was ricochet from celebratory gunfire, we don't know if this was intentional." No suspects had been arrested and no persons of interest had been identified as of early this morning. Police said they were following several leads.

AMBER HEARD’S ATTORNEYS REQUEST JOHNNY DEPP DEFAMATION VERDICT BE TOSSED:

Amber Heard’s attorneys have filed a motion calling for the verdict in Johnny Depp’s defamation trial to be thrown out.

In the memorandum submitted to the Fairfax County Circuit Court on Friday (July 1st), the Aquaman actress’ attorneys argue that Depp did not provide evidence of actual malice or defamation. Instead, they state that he "proceeded solely on a defamation by implication theory, abandoning any claims that Ms. Heard's statements were actually false."

Additionally, the document includes a request to investigate "improper juror service." Heard’s lawyers claim one of the jurors listed their birth year as 1945, whereas "publicly available information" shows they were born in 1970.

"This discrepancy raises the question whether Juror 15 actually received a summons for jury duty and was properly vetted by the court to serve on the jury," Heard’s attorneys said.

In response to this filing, one of Depp’s lawyers said it is "what [they] expected, just longer, no more substantive."

SIX KILLED, 30 INJURED IN MASS SHOOTING AT ILLNOIS FOURTH OF JULY PARADE:

Six people were killed and at least 30 injured yesterday (July 4th) when a gunman opened fire from a rooftop on a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, an affluent community in suburban Chicago. Highland Park Police Commander Chris O’Neill said the gunman used a "high-powered rifle" that was recovered at the scene, and a ladder was found attached to the building. A 21-year-old man identified as a person of interest was taken into custody after an hours-long manhunt. Highland Park resident Robert E. Crimo III was pulled over and arrested about five miles away, several hours after police released photos of him and his vehicle. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker said at a news conference, "I'm furious because it does not have to be this way... while we celebrate the Fourth of July just once a year, mass shootings have become a weekly -- yes, weekly -- American tradition," calling it "our uniquely American plague." Crimo was an aspiring rapper and had posted dozens of videos on social media, some of them with ominous and violent imagery, including of shootings. His deli owner father ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2019.

Ten year-old twin brothers and their neighbor saved their dad from drowning in a backyard pool. With their mother at work, Christian knocked on neighbors' doors and eventually ran into the street and flagged down a car to call 911. Meanwhile, Bridon started trying to do CPR on his dad. Bridon doesn't have emergency training — but he did recall seeing mouth-to-mouth performed in two movies: "Hook" and "The Sandlot," so he mimicked those moves until the police and ambulance showed up. "I'm so proud of my boys. I tell them, 'Remember you guys are heroes' and I will be grateful to them forever," said their father, Brad Hassig. Read more: https://on.today.com/3ntAAMo
