The John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation is leading a year-long celebration to honor Rep. John Lewis on what would have been his 85th birthday. They are kicking things off with a social media campaign to bring to life John Lewis' passion for equality and societal change through peaceful, non-violent methods. The Foundation encourages people to share a photo with John Lewis (or a picture with one of his books, a building, mural, street sign, etc.) on social media with the hashtag with some thoughts on the meaning of his legacy.

Located along the picturesque shores of Northeast Florida, American Beach is a historic enclave known for its cultural heritage and resilience. Celebrating its 90th anniversary, this community is the only residential beach in Nassau County where beach driving is still permitted. Residents, led by the nonprofit group Save Historic American Beach Inc., are demanding an end to this practice to protect endangered sea turtles and preserve the natural beauty of the area. Despite years of appeals to Nassau County commissioners, the issue remains unresolved. The group has now issued a Notice of Intent to sue under the Endangered Species Act if the county fails to act within 60 days.

Brunswick City commissioners recently commemorated Black History Month by recognizing the significant contributions of its Black citizens, particularly those who have served in leadership roles at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). During a recent commissioners’ meeting, the Rev. John Fields, from First Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church, highlighted six prominent Brunswick natives who held presidential positions at HBCUs, showcasing the city’s profound impact on Black education.

The distinguished individuals mentioned included Elias Blake Jr. (Clark Atlanta University), Rufus Patterson Perry (John C. Smith University), William H. Dennis Jr. (Albany State University), Timothy C. Meyers (Savannah State College), and Cornelius Troup (Fort Valley State University). All but one of these leaders have passed away, but their legacies continue to inspire future generations.
