I have seen so many people this week walking their dogs on these hot days. I witnessed 3 different people coming out of a store, standing at their vehicle and their dogs pacing to get relief from the hot pavement. Others I’ve seen walking on sidewalks around 12pm,3pm,5! One dog was actually limping and high stepping because of the pain! Please take these tips into consideration and share with others. How do I know if it’s too hot?
Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds if it is hot then it’s too hot for your pup!
Why Are These Surfaces So Dangerous?
These surfaces naturally absorb heat. Surfaces like asphalt tend to be dark in color and draw in heat, often making them much hotter than the climate itself. On an 80°F day, the pavement can reach temperatures as high as 125°F. As you can imagine, this can quickly become a danger to your puppy's paws. Rocks at the creek are even too hot on the banks! Your dogs feet are burning as he walks on the hot rocks!
How Do I Know if My Dog Has Burned Paws?
If you’re just finding out about these dangers or if your pup has spent too much time on hot pavement, here are some signs their paws could be burned:
Limping or avoiding walking
Licking or chewing their feet
Paw pads are darker in color than usual
Pads are visibly damaged
Blisters or redness
If your pup is showing any signs of hurt, damaged or burned paws, take them to the vet immediately. Burns can easily become infected and your vet is the best person to make sure your pup is ok. If you’re unsure whether or not your pup might have injured paw pads, still consult with your veterinarian just in case.

Wren's latest discovery is a bone. Not just any bone, but the most magnificent, fascinating bone she's ever seen. She's obsessed, carrying it everywhere and giving us The Look (you know, the one that says, 'You're just jealous of my awesome bone'). She carried this on our short 1 mile hike.
