Jackson College women fall from ranks of unbeaten

Jackson College women's basketball fell to Mid Michigan College Wednesday night 89-73. Operating with an injury decimated squad, it was an uphill battle for the Lady Jets from the tipoff. The Jets grabbed an early 5-2 lead, but then trailed for then entire contest. Adding to the already injury riddled list of players, the Jets were without the services of all-state sophomore guard Kaylona Butler, who suffered an ankle sprain and expected to be out 2 weeks. Her 23.3 ppg was missed as Jackson shot a season low 5-29 (17%)from the 3-pt line. Michelle McGee and Zoey Bamm kept Jackson in the game with strong efforts at both ends of the floor. A bright spot was Harmonie Bolton who came off the bench contributing 11pts and valuable minutes. The 4-1 Lady Jets are back in action on Saturday at Lake Michigan College.

Jackson College Women’s Basketball off to Historic Start

The Jackson College Lady Jets defeated Muskegon Community College 89-75 Tuesday night in the Vic Cuiss Fieldhouse propelling them to a 5-0 start, the best in school history.
Prior to tipoff, Jackson College basketball head coach Heather Brown commented, “If we win tonight it will be the best start in Jackson College women’s basketball program history. Our girls are pretty fired up to make history and we expect to win. The Jets surpassed the 4-0 start by the 1978 team, which also advanced to the national tournament.

Trailing in the first period 10-5, the lady Jets went on a 21-2 scoring spree to take a commanding 26-12 lead midway thru the second period. A lead that led them to victory.

During halftime, Lily Missionary Baptist Church presented the Jackson College Women’s Basketball program with a check for $2000.00

Southside Reunion 2024
They came from near and far for a few hours to laugh, hug, even cry and certainly to reminisce at the 2024 Southside Reunion held at the Martin Luther King, Jr Center, 1107 Adrian St. I heard some say, "Who is that?" Others say, "We need name tags" However, most faces were easily recognizable, and the conversations began with, "How long has it been?" Most importantly, it was fun to see old faces and remember those who are no longer with us. A big thank you to the Reunion committee for a great job in orchestrating this every-two-year event.

24th Annual WG Wade Memorial Open at Concord Hills Golf Course
The weather was challenging, but 27 men and women showed up for the 24th Annual Memorial Open on Memorial Day. Shanear Trice, despite gusting winds up to 25 mph, shot a respectable 83 to claim first place.
Temperatures in the mid 50s, along with high winds and a tough Concord Hills Golf Course didn't prevent these die hard golfers from having a great time celebrating Memorial Day and playing in honor of a past loved one.
Kris Gianetti took first place in the women's flight.
The next tournament is the Juneteenth on June 15. Check The Jackson Blazer for more details. Men and women golfers alike are all welcome.

The Jackson College Women's basketball team complete mission, defeat Lansing Community College 64-56 to claim the NJCAA Great Lakes District C Div II Championship.
Led by floor general Michelle McGee's 24 points, the Jackson College Lady Jets imposed their will , avenging an early season 3-pt loss to LCC, and beat the Stars when it mattered most. "We are a completely different team", comment Coach Heather Brown, referring to the 62-59 loss to LCC on November 18.
Once again, fouls plagued the Jets, but, all season long, Coach Brown has enjoyed the luxury of a deep bench, and Maya Pierce and Trinity Brown responded when their number was called.
In what appeared to be a defensive battle, Jackson led 24-20 at the half, with each team scoring only 6 points in the second period.
The third period saw the Jets took control with a 12 point advantage with McGee, Brown and Pierce all hitting 3pt shots.
In the final period, Lansing trimmed to the 12 point lead to 5, 57-52, but clutch free shooting and layups by Brown and Pierce stretched the margin back to double digits. To go along with McGee's 24, Trinity Brown threw in 12 points and Maya Pierce added 10.
Aside from claiming the NJCAA Great Lakes District C Championship and a trip to Joplin, Missouri to play in the national tournament, Jackson College received some personal hardware as Coach Heather Brown was named Coach of the Year, and point guard Michelle McGee was named tournament MVP.
