Christopher Gold is a songwriter with a biography seemingly made specially for Homegrown--born in Kentucky, raised in religion, broken by punk rock, moved to Wisconsin where he put together a scrappy and amp-shredding roots rock band. Gold is the only performer to play all 6 years of the prestigious Mile of Music festival and he is the driving force behind an annual Christmas fundraising effort to raise money for toys for kids living at Harbor House, a domestic abuse service in the Fox Valley. When the pandemic hit, Gold found himself unable to perform so he began a podcast from his couch at home where he plays songs and talks about anything and everything. His lyric-heavy folk tunes are given firepower by his backing band, The New Old Things, and we had invited them to last year's canceled festival. We can't wait to hear them play on July 11, but in the meantime, we're stuffing our ears with their music over at https://www.christophergold.com/

Benelli

Greetings, my name is Benelli and this is my story. I came to WCHS a while ago when my previous owner suffered some health issues and could no longer take care of me. I had lived with them for 3 years and we were very happy and I felt very loved; however, we agreed that it would be best for me to find a new home where I can get the exercise I need. It was all a bit sad but I like to keep a cheery outlook and make the best of a situation. I am a high energy gal looking for an active family; I'm a girl that likes to have fun. Although I may not be perfect just yet, I have been working on my manners with the staff and volunteers at the shelter; I am one of their favorite pups. Everyone here is really nice but I still dream of a home where I am part of a real family surrounded day and night with people who adore me. I know with daily exercise, a routine and training I will be an outstanding breed ambassador; I love everyone as evidenced by my wiggle-butt whenever someone approaches. If my family includes another dog it would be best if they are male and the tolerant type; I am quite a spitfire and like to play rough and can be a tad pushy so they need to understand that about me. I will need to meet any dog roommate before committing to anything so we ensure we are compatible. I must confess that I am completely incompatible with cats so kitty roomies would be a no-no. I simply have no respect for the feline type and disregard their attempts to correct me when I torment them. Children 12 years or older would be fabulous in my new home. I need the kids to be old enough to help me remember to keep four on the floor and help with my manners training. Since I am about 55 pounds of muscle, if I jump up on a small person, I know I could accidentally knock them over. I do OK with all sorts of handling as long as you don't mind me getting excited and jumping all over - just another opportunity for you to teach me some manners; perhaps we can practice settling or focus exercises. I look forward to showing you how gently I accept treats if you ask me to sit. I also know how to catch treats in midair and give kisses. I am quite the talented kiss-giver and know with your guidance and positive training I could learn so much more. I am very intelligent and think it would be fun to participate in mental activities where I can work my brilliant brain. I would love a long walk every day and other opportunities to burn some energy; I have been doing a lot of practice walking with the shelter volunteers. Maybe we could participate in canine sports, go hiking or get involved in dog parkour; it would be awesome to accompany you on many adventures. I am playful and affectionate with a clownish nature that is sure to keep you smiling; I promise to be a loyal and devoted companion forever. If I sound intriguing, fun and exciting stop by and ask for Benelli; give me a chance and I believe I will melt your heart.

Rex Review: News of the World

Plot: A former Confederate captain
helps an orphan return to her relatives after she is kidnapped by Indians.
Captain Kidd Tom Hanks) and Johanna (Helena Zengles) face numerous dangers as they travel across post-war Texas.

Tom Hanks is a nice likable guy. This movie is a nice likable movie. It’s very cinematic and touching in bland way.
It just doesn’t live up to it’s hype...
“A tower piece of cinema!” Not!
It’s a nice,pretty movie and quite forgettable.

A truly great film should have interesting, memorable characters. NOTW has none.
Hank’s Captain Kidd has less personality than a dead horses’s backside. He’s supposed to be an ex-confederate but he seems neither southern or rebellious.
He has no accent and no hatred of Yankees. He kind ,decent, sensitive and
perhaps the least interesting cowboy in the world.

The only thing unnusual about Kidd is he seems to be a communist.
He travels around Texas reading newspapers to the illiterate masses while adding some “workers of the world unite” commentary. Of course there were no commies in post-civil war Texas, and if there were they would have died of lead poisioning. Like Captian Kidd himself, director Paul Greengrass insist on forcing his politics on a captive audience.

The films villians are all boring too.
They are all two-dimentional mustache twirlers that seem to be stand-ins for modern day villians. You have
sexual predators, capitalist oppressors, enviromental rapists and ordinary rapists.
Unfortunately, none of these deplorables
has any charisma.

Johanna is as close to an interesting character as the movie comes.
She’s both shy and wild, vulnerable and resourseful. Mainly she’s a handfull.
But since Captain Kidd is a saint with nothing better to do, we know he won’t let her down.

Verdict: Good, but nothing to write home about.

Guess who is walking the Ice Age segment through Pike Lake this morning? Emily stayed overnight at our backpack sites and was heading toward Holy Hill this morning. She carries a week’s worth of food and walks 18 miles each day. Her goal is to be the first woman to walk all 1,200 miles of the Ice Age Trail in the winter! Good luck to Emily! Amazing!

If Emily Ford finishes her trek, she'll be just the second person and the first woman to thru-hike the trail in the winter.
