Truckin’ Downtown

"When you go to capital cities in other states, the downtown area is being used significantly to bring in revenue for the city as far as attractions and festivals and businesses and just in general. Ours is a ghost town. How do we change that? It's going to start with one event and one person at a time."

Get Fit, Eat Grilled Cheese, More

"Midtown Depot is a project that will ultimately develop into whatever the community decides it wants. This will be a place where you can bring your dog or your children, enjoy a sandwich and a beer, or come to a barbecue cookoff. It's a venue that that's going to grow and evolve over time."

Exploring Religion, Plurality, Coexistence at IMMC

"(This exhibit) also disputes the perception that Christians and Jewish people don't have a connection to Islam, Okolo Rashid says, and communicates the idea of religious pluralism, or a coexistence among different ones.

"To better understand Islam and some of these ideas that really are routed, you know in the Islamic religion, but also in the Islamic culture and this whole environment, and it is very much this whole idea is can Muslimhood, can Islam and the west coexist? and all those kinds of things. It really addresses those issues."

Blues in the City

"Mississippi blues icons and their ancestors, who created the art form and are upholding their blues legacy, are not given the notoriety that young majority artists are given. I take pride in keeping the indigenous creators and their ancestors in the spotlight by promoting a blues festival here in the capital city of Mississippi. ... Mississippi is the 'Birthplace of the Blues and America's Music.' As a Mississippian, I know how important the blues has been to all other forms of music. I was brought up on this music, and I feel I need to help keep the blues alive."

Martin’s Downtown Moves into 2019

"When you know that they've had a great meal, great drinks, and they're coming back and smiling, that's awesome. When you get 500 people plus in here, watching a great live show at night, and they're all just having a blast—that's really rewarding. And you're like, 'That's why I did all the work.'"

The new South Street Live features three bars and a restaurant that serves small-plate Cajun, Creole and soul-food dishes, as well as specialty wings, gumbo made from a recipe from Chadrick Odie's mother, and sweet potato pie that (Mario) Nocentelli makes himself."

Promoting Magnolias and Museums

"In our city, my city, we gather, we connect and we work together so things like streets, schools, neighborhoods and communities, mom-and-pops and record shops, big, buzzing industries and little French eateries can be made better, stronger, unstoppable, untoppable, survivors and thrivers, makers, shakers, dreamers and doers. City with heart, city with life, city with soul, Jackson."

Cultivating Small Business

"It's a great community to help other women support other women-owned businesses. They all work together really well and support each other in any way that they can. It really gives a feeling of camaraderie, not just in the women-owned businesses, but in all of our businesses that are owned here. But there's definitely that sisterhood in those women-owned business."
