Every step, is a step forward

Restoration work continued on Chesapeake & Ohio 2716 this past weekend.

In this photo, longtime volunteer Nick Hovey is seen removing the flexible staybolt caps as part of the teardown process for 2716's in-progress restoration. This step allows us to inspect the caps, sleeves, and bolts to determine if any need to be replaced or repaired.

"In addition to over 400 sleeves that have deteriorated due to the use of Pink Panther house insulation, the remaining caps must also be removed. As we move forward with removing the deteriorated sleeves, it has come to our attention that the caps were not properly reinstalled. Therefore, all caps must be removed, inspected, and, where necessary, repaired."

While the boiler of The Kentucky Railway Museum 's former L&N #152 briefly sits outside, we are offered a unique perspective. The sun does well at illuminating the firebox interior through the currently vacant Crown Staybolt holes.

What is this? Either Jason's next project has arrived in Irvine, or the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corp. "Boiler Garden" is finally taking root!

In this image are parts for 4 active steam projects, and 5 steam locomotives in total. The boilers are those of NKP 587 (stored), The Kentucky Railway Museum 's ex-L&N #152, and..... what could the 3rd be?

Greetings, Everyone! The inner throat of The Kentucky Railway Museum 's iconic former L&N 152 was removed. Revealing.... a mess. But in boiler work, there are many "messes" before visible progress is made. The flexible staybolt removal begins, and the water side of the inner throat will be abrasive blasted, inspected for cracks and other damage.

Was just thinking about this yesterday.

What many don't realize is that this equipment move was our "audition" with CSX to move the 2716. Even at the time, being someone professionally in the railroad industry, I wad the only one that was aware.

As such, everything had to be absolutely right. I spent almost $15,000 out of pocket on materials, parts, hotel rooms for myself, and anyone who would come to help. It was money Kentucky Steam didn't have, but it all had to be done correctly.

Bearings were cleaned and inspected, repacked with fresh grease. Brake cylinders gone through, missing pieces fabricated for those on the aux tender. Parts welded back on, defects repaired. Because impressions are everything, the bag was painted. With the help of Michael Brown, umler listings were created, tags applied.

And for the move to even occur, someone at csx put their job on the line, entrusting that I'd not say go until everything was 100% in shape for several hundred miles of mainline.

Really is something to take pride in, my mind, and skills, paved the way for all future moves over CSX. This move poured the foundation of credibility.
