Identifying rootstock suckers on your citrus tree is not difficult once you know what to look for. They are branches that grow from the lower rootstock portion of a grafted citrus tree, here below the diagonal scar. Citrus trees are often grafted onto a different set of roots, and those leaves can have a 3-leaf pattern or look like regular lemon leaves. In either case, you want to remove them as soon as you see them. When allowed to grow, the rootstock will eventually take over the tree and kill the main scion. Here is an example of a lemon tree with new growth coming from above the graft line. This branch is fruit bearing and can stay. #rootstock #gardening #lemontree #citrustree #growingtipsFour Winds Growers
