Today Dr Rachel dropped by to ultrasound the herd. I put a lot of thought into the breeding plan- from maintaining the best herd health and nutrition I can through choosing the right genetics for quality milking. I’m always a bit nervous to see who is (or isn’t) pregnant.
She confirmed that we are ten for ten this year ⭐️ This is the maximum number of “milking units” I can milk according to the Iowa raw milk law. According to the ultrasounds, we should expect 25+ kids to start arriving mid-March! 🥰 Yee Haw!

Cheers to Farmer Rich as he enters into his 60th year! He is always up for (in no particular order 😉) a challenge, a beer, a Red's game, an adventure, and a puzzle. Thanks for being our go-to guy. Much love on your big day ❤️

Today was the GREAT MIGRATION! The dreaded day when the chickens and their ramshackle wheelie coop travel from the bottom of the pasture after a season of grazing to their winter home back at the top of the hill. It typically involves swearing, run away birds, and sore backs. Today Farmer Rich had everything planned and it all came together perfectly! Cheers to the weekend and a big to-do checkednoff the winter prep list! 🍻

Rich has been in squirrel mode cleaning up walnuts all over the farm. Today was the BIG day! He hauled the truckload over to Ronald Yoder’s farm near Kalona. Mr Yoder receives a machine to process black walnuts for a business in Missouri.
The walnuts are loaded from the tuck into a hopper. The hulls are sent one direction and the nuts another. The walnuts are bagged into roughly 50 # bags and shipped to Missouri. The nut meats are processed for human consumption and the shells are ground into an industrial abrasive.
What’s the payout, you ask? I’ll let you do the algebra! He left with about $100 bucks 😂
