It was announced today that going forward, IMPD will be enforcing the statewide juvenile curfew. All minors up to age 17 are to be at home between the hours of 11pm and 5am on weekdays. Teens, age 15 - 17 must be at home between 1am and 5am on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Exceptions can be applied for work, school, religious events, the exercise of the right to assemble, or juveniles who are accompanied by a guardian.
In a press conference today, IMPD stated that a breach of the curfew is not a criminal offense, but that it is against the law due to the age of the minor. In the occurance that a minor is found to breach the curfew, action may be taken. In that situation, an attempt to contact the parent or guarian would be made and they would be asked to pick up the minor, with sufficient time allotted to do so. If the parent/guardian cannot be contacted or if they do not pick up the minor in the allotted timeframe the minor will be transported by police to the Juvenile Detention Center.
IMPD stated that they cannot and will not be your babysitter.
The new enforcement of the curfew is an effort to protect minors and prevent criminal activity. Just last week seven minors were shot in downtown Indianapolis in a single incident.
