Great news for Lake Tahoe! Eight miles of defunct, lead-sheathed telecommunication cables will be removed from Lake Tahoe by AT&T in coordination with our team at the League. The company recommitted to remove the cables now that they’ve settled a lawsuit dating back to 2021.

This milestone is an important step in our mission to Keep Tahoe Blue – one we’ve been working on behind the scenes for the past three years. From accelerating permits and mapping the cables, to securing the staging area for equipment, the League has been coordinating closely with federal, state, and local agencies and AT&T to push this project forward.

Our behind-the-scenes work continues to play a crucial role in protecting Tahoe’s waters. While this is a major milestone, it’s just the beginning. The League will oversee every step to make sure the cables come out quickly and safely. 💙

As expected, we have seen a few flakes of occasionally mixed in with the rain at the lab (6984 feet). The rain/snow line is around 1000-1500 feet above us, so we are seeing it on the mountain peaks around us.

This is the view at Palisades Tahoe High Camp at 8200 feet!

Today’s Fun Fact: High elevation areas around Tahoe may receive snow on Friday night. Temperatures are forecast to drop below 30 degrees and elevations above 7,000’ may receive over an inch of snow. Highs will return to the 70s next week, but could this be a sign of another snowy winter ahead?

The photo shows the summertime construction of the lower ski lift structure at Sugar Bowl, c. 1939. It was named the "Disney Lift" after Walt Disney, an investor in the ski resort. This was the first chair lift in California, thus making Sugar Bowl a pioneer in skiing. The cost was 25 cents to ride up but $2.00 if you wanted to ski down. Did you get to ride it back down if you didn't ski?

Michigan's "sunset coast" sounds awfully nice.

The “Welcome to Michigan” sign feels like a release. After an hour or two of driving east from Chicago, past the smokestacks and train tracks, the jammed freeways of Illinois and Indiana, you loosen your grip on the steering wheel. You turn up the radio and roll down the windows. You’ve arrive...
