On Friday, Jan. 17, a Metrobus driver died after a medical emergency that caused a crash at the historic blues barbershop in Riverdale Park. The F4 bus hit the brick building at 4701 Queensbury Rd., formerly the home of the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation, going all the way to its back wheels. It also damaged the 6108 Rhode Island Ave. building, formerly home to Rivieras Tapas Bar and the old S&J Restaurant. https://bit.ly/42fwk8U -

The building was torn down in 2009 to make way for the Arts District Hyattsville shops, including Busboys and Poets and Yes! Organic Market. A former Sunoco station near the Hyattsville Crossing Metro station will soon become a 7-Eleven. Located at 3599 East-West Highway, across from the Mall at Prince Georges, the former gas station was completely demolished. A new apartment building in Hyattsville features one of the corridor’s latest pieces of public art, a giant mural by Washington, DC-based artist Joel Berger, who is also CEO and co-founder of Artolution. Bergner told the Wire that he landed the project through the online platform Wxllspace, which connects real estate developers with muralists. Located at 3505 Hamilton St., the new public safety building will include a large public meeting room, space for the department’s K9 dogs, a computer lab for training and a dispatch center. Alan Binstock, a well-known Mount Rainier architect and sculptor who was once named Hyattsville Wire, readers’ favorite local artist, died on Oct. 29 of complications from surgery. He was 77. A native of the Bronx, many of Binstock’s public art can be seen around the Route 1 corridor, including the colorful “Ribbon of Life” at University Town Center in Hyattsville, which is evocative of strands of DNA. https://bit.ly/3CBpSy7 -

Hyattsville has begun an upgrade of The Spot park near the Arts District located at 4505 Hamilton St., just south of the Yes! Organic Market parking lot along the Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail. The Spot started in 2021 as an informal pop-up park where community events and concerts could be held. It was the brainchild of SoHy Co-op, a nonprofit group that helps support local businesses, with a grant made possible by Maryland Milestones (Anacostia Trails Heritage Area). https://bit.ly/4hMRgJy -
