Vinny Appice played John Lennon’s last show. He also played with Dio, Black Sabbath and Rick Derringer. Before Bill and I interviewed him, I never really paid attention to his work with Sabbath and Dio, as I didn’t imagine anything could rival the original Sabbath lineup and I wasn’t a Dio fan, besides, I always considered Vinny a lesser version of his older brother, Carmine (Vanilla Fudge, Jeff Beck Group, Beck, Bogert and Appice, Rod Stewart, Cactus).
 I was wrong. Vinny is a superb drummer in his own right. He’s one of those guys who never speeds up a fill, an indication of supreme confidence. His groove and feel are undeniable and he did some incredible fills on those Dio recordings. And, he was in a band with one of the most iconic metal singers ever, Ronnie James Dio.
Taylor Hawkins referred to Vinny as a big influence. He’s a great drummer and a great guy.

I had to say goodbye to sweet Maggie two days ago. I had her for 15 years. She was silly, affectionate, beautiful and most importantly, very happy. I spoiled her. She had a long, stress-free life. I was with her when she was put to sleep. It was quick and painless. Precious girl.
