The International Professional Surfing Tour was the first organization that crowned our 1st World Surf Champion, Peter “THE MATE” Townend !! Randy Rarick and Fred Hemings founded that tour 1976.
“THE CALIFORNIA KID” dropped in at the tail end of the IPS and continued onto the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) that was founded by and Ian “KANGA” Cairns in 1982. Then in 2013 the ASP was acquired to what it is known as today, The World Surf League (WSL) .

ABC Wide World of Sports used to televise the Pipe Masters. “SAND CRAB” watched it with his Mom and looked at her and said “Someday I’m gonna win that thing!”
Fast forward to 1978, “SAND CRAB” is 17 years old standing next to his heroes about to surf in the Pipe Masters finals. At first he was a little nervous but as the day went on, he felt more relaxed. He saw that Gerry Lopez , Rory Russell , Dane Kealoha (REST IN POWER) , and Larry Blair .blair64 , were only human. He thought he had as could as chance as anyone, given the right opportunities and waves. As he padded out though, Dan Merkel (amazing water photographer) told him he was going to die out there!!?? blair64 won that year.
But what an amazing confidence booster and milestone.
In the morning of the final he was “SAND CRAB”. At the of the day he became what he is forever known as, “THE CALIFORNIA KID”!!

SUNDAY SHOUTOUT
Sometimes you need a good sparring partner to help push you to be better. For “SAND CRAB” that was none other than Surfer/Shaper David Barr !! Dave was the YING to the YANG that “SAND CRAB” needed to strive and thrive!!

I can’t recall us talking about “THE CALIFORNIA KID” riding for , but maybe we did? I do remember him telling us about making it to the USA Championships in Texas. He had to make money to get there and took a job picking tomatoes at the fields where now stands.
There was a hurricane swell for the contest. In his first heat, he said a Gale force wind💨 blew and ripped his surfboard from his arm. The surfboard flew high and slammed to the ground and broke in half. He got another nickname that day “BOARDLESS”.

Joe Martin Buran was born in 1961 in Cleveland, Ohio. His Father was a Military Recruiter who served in two wars and his Mother a feisty Catholic and former homecoming Queen. They moved from state to state, but eventually fate had them settle in Oceanside, California. Joe was in 6th grade. Back then, on TV’s Brady Bunch, he noticed that the “cool kids” wore corduroy bell bottoms and at school the “cool kids” were Surfers. Things quickly changed. JOE was a swimmer, but now he is JOEY a Surfer.
As you may know by now we love nicknames. Nicknames are mostly terms of endearment, but sometimes not. We try and focus on the positive and funny ones.
This photo is from 1978 where Joey “SAND CRAB” Buran is captured, probably doing what he does that got him that nickname.
Joey later became “THE CALIFORNIA KID” after blitzing the contest scene.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY
In our conversation with “THE CALIFORNIA KID”, he brings up the name Chris O’Rourke. Chris was from La Jolla and a couple years older than Joey. Chris was a naturally gifted prodigy Surfer. Joey told us about a session at Horseshoe when Gerry Lopez and Rory Russell made an appearance, but Chris was stole the show. He was pulling into barrels, no handed, and doing things that only has done since. Rabbit Bartholomew touted Chris O’Rourke to be a future World Surf Champion. Sadly he passed too young from Hodgkin’s disease. Thanks Joey for sharing his memory with us.

Our guest this week is a Hall of Fame Pro Surfer that finished #7 on the Championship Tour. With multiple career victories including the prestigious 1984 Pipeline Masters! In
1985 he founded the Professional Surfing Association of America (PSAA) tour. But from highs to lows, in just a few short years later, depression got the best of him. He hit
rock bottom. Soon after, he gave his life to Jesus Christ and he couldn’t believe that his purpose in life was more than just winning Pipe Masters and that his Best has yet to come!!! For the last has 30 years he has been balancing both careers as Coach for the USA World Amateur Champion Team and others, as well as being a full-time Pastor, a guest speaker, an author, and a mentor focusing on our youth! From being on the top of Pro-Surfing, to opening Calvary Chapel Churches, to eventually starting his own Church “Worship Generations” his story isn’t finished! We are beyond honored and pumped to sit down with the Legendary  Mr. Joey “THE CALIFORNIA KID” Buran! As you may have guessed or might have already known, Dick Metz is the Surfer that inspired the movie “Endless Summer”. He documented his 3 year trip of chasing waves and incredible experiences. Once he got back home, he showed his photos to Bruce Brown and John Severson.
In June 1966, Endless Summer came out and became a blockbuster hit, inspiring Surfers all over the globe to seek out waves and travel the world 🌍. Listen to this week’s episode Dick Metz !!

02/19/2024

In the early 1950’s Dick Metz father owned “SURF LIQUOR” in Huntington Beach. Dick ran it for his father. He would Surf the pier and have the liquor salesman walk onto the pier and take his orders while he surfed. A great example of “mixing business with pleasure”. Huntington was pretty sketch my during these times. Surf Liquor was burglarized several times and Dick found himself unable pay the mortgage. He slept in the liquor store and ate baloney sandwiches everyday for several months to try to save the business. He and his girlfriend (s) would sleep in an army cot. He would read these magazines, “TRUE” and “ARGOSY” every night that told stories of beautiful places with Gorgeous Naked Ladies.
At the same time Disneyland was breaking ground on their new theme park and needed to get liquor licenses. He sold the liquor license and paid off their debts and had the money to embark on the trips he read about in the magazines.
First stop was Tahiti, then Australia, South Africa, Egypt, and then Spain to run with the bulls. Sound familiar!!??

We often talk about how much more “MANLY” the older generations were. They were divers, rode motorcycles, skiers, fishermen, and Surfers on top of all that!!?? Surfers back in the day had no wetsuits and 100 lb Surfboards!!? We asked Dick about this and what he thought made him and his buddies such swashbucklers. His answer was pretty simple, “there were less rules”. Listen to this week’s episode !! Thank you for the 📸

Although these stories have been told, they are still worth listening to. Hobie Alter was college dropout, but he was a GENIUS. He invented and created so many wonderful things that people all over the world have enjoyed for generations and into the future.
Dick Metz was the man behind Hobie, who helped take Hobie’s ideas and inventions to market.
Dick is responsible for creating the first “SURFSHOP”. The first shop was in Dana Point, and soon after in Honolulu. It was crazy to hear how much trust that these two friends had. They never had contracts and hardly ever discussed finances. Listen to this week’s episode with !!

It was the early 1940’s, when the world was going through the Great Depression. Mr. Metz had a restaurant on the sand in Laguna Beach. He traded burgers and beers to two young Surf Bums in exchange for babysitting his son Dick.
The Surf Bums were Peanuts Larson and Hevs McClellan. Dick was introduced to Surfing at a very young age, around 6 or 7. There were probably less than 100 surfers in California back in those days. Dick met Hobie Alter later on. The story isn’t possible without Dick Metz.

“SPEEDER” took a long hiatus from Surfing and the industry. He moved to Idaho to raise a family and became a plumber. After a decade or so he moved back and rekindled his passions. One day on the beach, he ran into his longtime friend and sponsor, Aaron “AP” Pai . needed a new team manager and asked “SPEEDER” if he was interested. “SPEEDER” was making good money as a plumber and was on the union. He also felt he might be out of touch with the youth. But “AP” somehow knew and convinced him to take the job.
All “AP” really needed to say was
“If you work with we’ll go Surfing and go on Surf Trips”.

HAPPY VALENTINES 💘 DAY
Well I couldn’t find a picture of “SPEEDER” with a wetsuit or logo on his Surfboard, so I opted for this photo and song. It seems fitting for Valentines 💘 Day .“SPEEDER” was Team Manager for many years. Many of their riders have said great things about ”SPEEDER”. However if you’re , ‘s fiercest rival at the time, you probably didn’t care much for “SPEEDER”. Industry pioneer and legend Danny “DK” Kwock told me how furious he was when “SPEEDER” snatched local boy Cordell “CORDY” Miller .miller from . “DK” had to go over the top $$ and got him back though.
No love ❤️ lost between them.

Back in the day, we used to plaster our bedroom walls with pages from Surfer , Surfing, and BreakOut Magazines. We would find a particular image that resonated with us and imagine ourselves doing what they were doing! Sometimes the pictures were of someone like Gerry Lopez charging into a Pipeline barrel or someone doing a slash right in front of the water photographer!! “SPEEDER” linked up with Chuck Schmid and “got the shot” on several occasions. We wonder how many bedroom walls these pictures may have hung!!?? Listen to this week’s episode Mark “SPEEDER” Reeder!!
