The Biddle family, including publishers John H. Biddle and Joseph F. Biddle II, published the paper until Oct. 21, 1991, when it was purchased by Sample News Group, headed by George and Marlene Sample. In addition to The Daily News, the Samples publish The Daily Herald, Tyrone, and The Bedford Gazette, Bedford. They also own and operate ATJ Printing in Huntingdon. Among the new members of the Mount Union Area School District team at the start of the 2024-25 school year will be the first-ever school security officer.

The Mount Union Area School Board voted in June to offer a three-year contract to G-Force, a Gettysburg-based security firm which will provide the district with one-full-time officer for 183 days per year.

Mapleton officials Wednesday discussed the results of recent smoke-testing and reported concerns over significant inflow and infiltration into the community’s sewage treatment system.

Smoke-testing of the borough’s sewer lines commenced in June. Authority member Mike Corbin and councilman Kevin McConaughey said that they replaced vent caps where they were missing but noted the testing revealed dozens of locations that provide egress for stormwater to flow into the sewage plant.

The Summer Fun Lunch Bunch raised more than $300 for the Huntingdon Food Pantry at the 15th Street United Methodist Church. Jack Servello, wife of Pastor Barb Servello, agreed to shave his head if the kids who participated in the program raised funds for the food pantry.

Members of the Southern Huntingdon County School board held a special board meeting before their regularly scheduled workshop meeting Wednesday evening to deal with matters, including personnel matters, handbook revisions and second readings that need to be addressed before the start of school.

Superintendent Dwayne Northcraft informed board members at the June meeting if they needed to have a board meeting before the start of school, they would do so before the workshop meeting in August, as they board had no meeting in June.

The Huntingdon Area School District’s free lunch and breakfast program is now expanding to the high school.

The board voted at the Aug. 12 meeting to include all district four schools in the Community Eligibility Provision program for the 2024-25 school year. The program, administered through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, allows schools to provide free meals to all enrolled students.

Saxton Borough Council Monday evening agreed to draft a letter of support for the Southern Alleghenies Planning & Development Commission (SAP&DC) to conduct a trail connectivity study within northern Bedford County and southern Huntingdon County.

SAP&DC is patterning with the Bedford County Development Association (BCDA) and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR) on this project.

While waiting for word on the fate of a funding application, the Huntingdon Area School Board took a step forward on a proposed roof replacement project at the high school by accepting a low bid of $1.177 million, with the understanding the project is contingent upon the receipt of a grant.

The winning bid for the project was submitted by Cardinal Group Service Inc. based in Somerset County. At their monthly meeting Monday night, the six board members present issued a unanimous vote to accept the company’s bid.

The Huntingdon County Commissioners approved funding for human services and related resources for the 2024-25 fiscal year at their weekly meeting Tuesday morning.

The funds, provided through a state block grant, provide a range of human services, drug and alcohol services and mental health services. The plan is effective July 1 of this year through June 30, 2025.

A Huntingdon resident and Grange member for over 80 years was honored Saturday by family and friends as this year’s recipient of the Huntingdon County Pomona Grange Award for Public Service.

Laura McCardle joined the Brandywine Grange in her native Chester County at age 5 in 1943, following in the footsteps of her parents and grandparents. She moved to Westminster Woods in 2004 and has since been a member of the Shavers Creek Grange.

Created several years ago, the two-day event focuses on the town’s rich industrial and transportation history while hosting numerous community activities on the J.A. Carney Athletic Field, located along Route 913 across from the RW&BT Fire Hall in Robertsdale.

Nick Yocum of Blacklog Valley saved the best for last Thursday at the Huntingdon County Fair as he took home the Cliff McElrath Memorial Trophy at the conclusion of the Premier Showmanship Contest.

The win marked his last time in the show ring as a 4-H/FFA youth exhibitor.
