Heading to MoCCAArts Fest?!

with We're happy to announce that we'll be joined this year at MoCCAArts Fest by Centralia author Miel Vandepitte, who will be visiting all the way from Brussels!

Miel will be signing all weekend at the Living the Line booth, as well as taking part in a panel at the event (and at least one other appearance as well!) We hope you'll come by, say hello, and pick up a copy of Centralia if you haven't already!

REPOSTED • This one I decided not to recolour, since the way I originally coloured it was more intentional. The fear of growing apart from close friends is one I think I will always have, but I feel more in control of it now. I wrote this before university and the pandemic, when I would see my friends every day, wondering what would happen after we all separated after graduation. I don't get to see the friend who inspired a lot of Grace and her friendship with Abby a lot but each time it's like picking up where we left off. Growing up does not automatically mean growing apart.

Book Review - At Childhood’s End 📚

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5

Ace is no longer the teenager she once was, but when a spaceship appears in the Moon’s orbit, Ace slips on her old jacket and has to confront the demons of her past - including the reason she left The Doctor and the TARDIS.

As soon as I saw Sophie Aldred, the actor who played Ace in the classic series, wrote a book about Ace having a new adventure with a new “Professor,” I was sold. I love this trend of companions returning to their roles and continuing the story. I could hear Ace’s voice clearly as I read, and it felt like Aldred really felt comfortable back in the mind of Dorothy McShane.

One of my favorite elements of this book was watching Whittaker’s Doctor have to grapple with the consequences of her 7th incarnation’s actions. The Doctor always tries to do right, but they don’t always explain the entire plan to others, and it hurts people. I loved watching the Doctor have to try and atone for previous actions while handling the current crisis.

One thing that bothered me was how Yaz, Graham, and Ryan were treated. They al felt like super side characters, and Yaz and Ace butted heads solely because apparently companions don’t think about the Doctor having other people in the TARDIS ever. I felt that the trio’s inclusion was more because they had to be there than because they added anything to the development of this story. I would have loved to see Yaz and Ace actually handle their issues rather than be hostile; I would have loved to see Graham and Ryan talk to Ace more. But overall, I really enjoyed this book and think it’s a great contribution from Ace to the ever growing story that is Doctor Who.

I cannot tell you how much I adore Japanese style graphic novels. Their imagery is always stunning and the characters young and old offer so much in persona and lessons. Between Snow and Wolf is no different. The beautiful illustrations tell a story of a young girl born of man and demon and her journey to find herself and her purpose. That’s not all though. It’s fast paced look at how the young grow up fast, rushing into the world and the different challenges along the way.

The daughter and father dynamic was beautiful and hinted at familial separation. What I loved most was the focus on promises and how they risk lying when given. The focus on the power of a promise was richly woven into this tale.

There are few areas that were a little choppy and some of the content seems written for younger readers but that didn’t hinder me from whisking through this one. Stunning art, well crafted storyline and adorable characters you can’t help but adore. I absolutely recommend this to readers who love Japanese fairy tales!
