We’re having an open work day this Saturday to help set up our raised planting boxes and could use a hand! Come on by and see the garden, lend a hand, and meet some of your other fellow gardeners! This is a great opportunity to get the kids involved too!

Getting name-dropped by The New York Times is a pretty remarkable way to start a new year. We’re beyond humbled for Humboldt be listed as one of their ’52 Places for a Changed World’ ( #36).

The Times’ annual “52 Places” is one of their signature pieces of journalism and this year’s list focuses on places where responsible change is actually happening — ”where endangered wild lands are being preserved, threatened species are being protected, historical wrongs are being acknowledged, fragile communities are being bolstered — and where travelers can be part of the change.”

They note: “We are especially keen on places where grass-roots efforts are pushing transformation, making their patch of the world better in the face of all that is wrong.” That’s a pretty succinct way of describing what A Bolder Humboldt is all about.

This is a pretty big arrow to be pointed at our little town, but we plan to rise to this occasion. In the next several months, we will unleash a handful of projects that we’ve been working on for years: the guest rooms in the historic Bailey; a craft-cocktail bar; our 160-seat microbrewery and restaurant; a new brunch restaurant; a bookstore; a 50s-style h***y tonk.

And the work will continue. With additional projects being dreamed up, we need more hands to make them happen in a timely manner. If you’re dreaming of a simpler life, where you have the room to take risks and pursue your passions, consider Humboldt as the right opportunity. If you grew up here and left to discover the world, know that there’s a vibrant place for you back home. And if you’re already enjoying life here in Humboldt, let’s carry the pride of living in a place of opportunity and community together. There’s something special happening here, and we’d love for you to be a part of it.

The 2022 list highlights places around the globe where travelers can be part of the solution.

There’s never a shortage of challenges for the Bolder Builder crew, but yesterday they rocked the installation of this double hood system in The Bailey kitchen. Looking legit!

A few years ago, on the grounds of the local museum, we discovered an amazing artifact of Humboldt's history leaning up against one of the buildings there. Covered in leaves and sinking into the ground was a giant metal sign reading "UNION" on both sides, shards of neon glass poking out of the angular channel letters.

With our brewery project finding steam under the name Union Works Brewing Co., we saw an opportunity to save a piece of history from further decay and to share it with a larger audience. The historical society gave their blessing for us to set out to have it preserved and reconditioned into working order with the help of the pros at Steinmetz Neon LLC in Kansas City. Within a few minutes of taking the sign into their shop, they'd connected power to one of the few pieces of glass that had survived intact, and amazingly, this 92-year-old neon tube *glowed up bright red* just like it was new! It'll take some time and skilled effort, but we're so excited to see this beautiful piece of craftsmanship come back to life once again and hang where people can enjoy it.

The sign was originally made for the Humboldt Union newspaper (naturally) and hung over their office on the 600 block of Bridge Street for forty-some years. Photos from downtown parades show it jutting proudly out of the grand brick building there.

A little digging through the Humboldt Union newspaper archives reveals an article from January 2, 1930, under the headline "A NEW ELECTRIC SIGN". It reads: "The Kansas Utilities Company put a force of men to work erecting the Union's new Neon electric sign and the job was completed and the current hooked up on Christmas Eve, showing UNION in fiery red letters. Everybody is agreed that Humboldt needs more electric signs and this paper is glad to say it won't be long until several more are installed about town. They are not only very attractive but are a great aid with street lights in dispelling darkness. Next to pulling a city and community out of the mud with paved street and surfaced highways, consider the importance of pulling the business district out of the darkness of night. It's keeping step with progress. Let's keep the good work coming along."

Indeed.

Looks at this beautiful town having fun. Miss you already, Water Wars.
