Extremely Well Said

It can be devastating to learn about so many smaller venues closing the door to local and small acts. Clubs are no longer booking bands that don’t draw or have the “numbers.”
In NH, the local music business model use to be largely based on the motivation and incentive to eventually open up for larger bands, instead of teaching smaller bands how to become larger bands.

Now you know, we have been saying for over 10 years, that BIG bands are NOT in any type of professional business of building up small bands, guiding and grooming their future competitors for success. We have mentioned throughout the years that live shows are successful when it’s people are safe, the room is filled and packed, bands get treated fairly and people have fun. It’s actually that Simple.
Venues and promoters are now coming forward and finally openly admitting that they can no longer sustain booking bands simply using the “loyalty card.” We all know about pay to play shows and events only create opportunities for the rich and privileged bands to be paid in exposure. We have all seen how harmful and unmusical that is.
We have pleaded with local bands and regional bands to STOP paying to play or open up for washed up B list bands and celebrities, but the grip of clout, popularity, desire and image to be a a public figure themselves has always outweighs authenticity.

Our solution has always been simple. BANDS have to draw. All of us. Not for the venues or organizers. For OUR own good. In order to make an argument for us locals in an increasingly difficult and challenging field, to survive and compete, playing stages on our own, we must start working together. On our own.

Each band confirmed for the show you book and each individual in the band going to the show needs to share this goal. None of us has ever needed any celebrity headliners to pack our own rooms for us.

Not every gig is going to be a raging night but, playing an empty room is a choice of the bands and promoters responsible for working the gig together and playing the gig.
When booking the shows, try to create goals around draw and advertising, save a small budget and join forces on marketing and creative advertising.

Proving that we can grow our fans and pack rooms should be a priority for all of us small bands. It’s not bad news. Working together is not bad news. It is work. And it’s the key to our solution and a standard we are enforcing when booking with promoters and bands in the future.
No one or two bands should have to pack a 400 cap room. If you book 100 days out from the event, try to invite 1 -2 people each day for the 100 days total. Also no one or two of your band members in your band should be responsible for drawing all the fans for your whole band. Venues , promoters and especially bands have top priority sharing the goal drawing as many people as possible to the event.
Because no one … no one not even you fans want to go play music in an empty club.
