Today is Day. This is the day when Latinas’ pay finally reaches the amount paid to white, non-hispanic men in 2020. Latinas are paid just 57 cents, on average, for every $1 a white man is paid, resulting in lost pay amounting to over 1 million dollars over the course of a 40 year career. The pay gap harms Latinas, our families, our futures and our entire country. to be paid equally, and they shouldn’t have to wait. They must be paid fully and fairly NOW.

Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, the westernmost Confederate state of Texas was still enslaving people. Freedom didn’t come for them until June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas. And now is a federal holiday. We’re not exactly sure how America will celebrate this holiday while more than 20 states have banned the teaching of historical racism and its impact on modern society.
