1. On August 10, 2024 the Howell County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division discovered skeletal remains in rural Howell County Missouri. Due to the complexity of the scene, and the inclement weather, Howell County Patrol Deputies and Troopers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol maintained 24- hour coverage on the scene until the skeletal remains were fully recovered on August 14, 2024.

2. Identification of the remains has not been determined, and an autopsy will be conducted before the remains are sent to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Laboratory for identification. Please note that positive identification will take some time. As soon as the remains are positively identified, an update will be provided by the Howell County Sheriff’s Office.

3. The Howell County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Missouri Highway Patrol, West Plains Police Department, West Plains Fire Department, Howell County Coroner’s Office, The Howell County Prosecutor’s Office, Howell County Road and Bridge, South Howell EMS, South Eastern Missouri State Anthropology Department, and the Investigators and Deputies from Fulton County, and Sharp County Arkansas for their assistance.

Congratulations!

To be employed in education for 35 years is a great accomplishment that very few educators ever achieve, and working 40 years in education is nearly unheard of today.

On Wednesday August 14, Salem High School librarian Mrs. Jan Brown started her 50th year as a public school employee.

Join us in welcoming Mrs. Brown back for her 50th year of service to public education.

PROBATION ABSCONDER IN THE WRONG HOUSE

On the morning of August 8, 2024, Deputy Marc Boyd was dispatched to a residence on Mobile Ln. in Horseshoe Bend. The call was in due to the homeowner returning home from work and finding a man asleep on a chair in her living room.

When Deputy Boyd arrived on scene, he found Joshua Collins. When Collins was asked why he was he was at the residence he first said the house was his. Collins then stated another person had let him in. Collins then fled from the house leaving his boots near the chair he had been in. The boots were seized as evidence along with a t-shirt and a ball cap that were hanging on a lamp. A pipe used to smoke methamphetamine was also located. Deputy Boyd located approximately 28 grams of methamphetamine.

A short time later, Collins was found hiding in a closet at a residence on Cameo Ln. in Horseshoe Bend. At the time of his arrest, Collins was listed as a probation absconder for previous drug related felony charges.

As a result, Joshua Collins, 39 of Salem, has been charged in the Izard County Circuit Court with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, fleeing on foot, and criminal trespass. Collins has also been charges as a habitual offender for having more than four previous felony convictions. Collins also has a warrant out of Sharp County for probation revocation.
