New Exhibit: (Re)Generations: Challenging Scientific Racism in Hawaiʻi

On view through October 24, 2021
Bishop Museum J. M. Long Gallery

(Re)Generations: Challenging Scientific Racism in Hawaiʻi explores a collection of photographs and plaster busts created by anthropologist Louis R. Sullivan as a tool to measure and classify the physical traits of a supposedly “pure” Native Hawaiian race. The collection was presented at the Second International Eugenics Conference (1921) with Bishop Museum’s endorsement and support. Measuring, classifying, and categorizing people through “race science” has been used to justify slavery, displacement, colonial occupation, eugenics, and genocide. We know that there is no biological truth to race, and research like Sullivan’s is now long discredited. Yet the myths of race and racial superiority, and the structural inequalities they support, have lasting and traumatic effects.

Though Sullivan’s photographs and busts are tied to a legacy of scientific racism, the collection has become one of Bishop Museum’s primary sources for genealogical research in Hawaiʻi. (Re)Generations aims to celebrate the ways this collection has been reappropriated by Native Hawaiian descendants as a vehicle for (re)discovering ancestors, genealogical connections, and family. Photographs of persons celebrated in the exhibit were selected through collaboration with their living descendants. Photographs and busts are recontextualized outside of Sullivan’s eugenics research through meaningful histories, including the additions of descendant interviews and family heirlooms, which offer a glimpse into these people’s lives and legacies.

Our hope is that this exhibit is not an end in itself, but rather aims to start conversations on how the Museum can better connect with and serve Native Hawaiian communities and stakeholders.

Today is Prince Kūhiō Day, an official holiday in Hawai`i. Government offices and schools are closed, buses run on a modified schedule and parking is free (except in most of Waikīkī).

This holiday honors Prince Kūhiō Kalaniana`ole’s life and is always celebrated on or around March 26, his birthday. In pre-COVID times there would be a month-long celebration with parades and festivals sometimes lasting up to a week centered on Hawaiian culture and traditions. Especially on kaua`i where the Prince was born.

Kūhiō served as a U.S. delegate for 19 years after the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. He was an advocate for farmers, fought to provide homesteads for Native Hawaiians, was instrumental in developing Pearl Harbor and Honolulu Harbor and dedicated himself to educating the U.S. Congress about Hawai`i and what it needed with the goal of improving his people’s lives.

The new family-style
offers 7 courses w/ 11 additional menu items that can be substituted, basically making it a build-your-own tasting menu for $60/person. A killer deal for this level of creativity and technique!

Our favorites include the Korean Style Hot & Sticky Chicken Skins, Beet Lotus, Oxtail Soup Dumplings, Crunchy Kale Salad, and Misoyaki Roasted Cauliflower.

moved to and is better than ever!
Pictured here are skewers of lamb, chicken cartilage, beef brisket w/ tendon (super ono), and pork w/ emoki mushroom. BUT! On the side, gets even better! Braised Beef salad w/ cucumber, peppers and cilantro was the perfect cool, crunchy accompaniment to the grilled meats, soft slices of pork belly and lightly salted cucumber hung suspended over a moat of spicy shoyu vinaigrette, and don’t get us started on the vegetable side dishes! If you are vegetarian and your friends want to go eat meat, join them! If we only ate the braised cabbage with clear, chewy noodles (mung bean?) bathed in toasted sesame sauce and the eggplant poached w/ creamy garlic sauce we could have died happy. Our advice, make a reservation well in advance and go early (like 5pm) before they start running out of stuff. They are that popular! Enjoy! 😀🤙

Last week we checked out the new in by and discovered

You know that moment when someone says, “I’m experimenting, want to try?” You’re excited. And a little nervous that their radical combination won’t work. And then you’re like, “Oh man, what did I sign up for?”

It came out as a glass of army green juice on the rocks speckled with forest green algae.

Here’s the thing. It was earthy and Invigorating, and we loved it! Owner TK Yamada’s creation entitled “The Dirty Fern (also nicknamed “Fern Gully”),” was a blend of smooth coffee, buttery matcha, and locally harvested spirulina.
It tasted like kale chips. And we mean that in the best possible way! 😆

Barista’s choice changes daily at Try coffee. Go have some fun! And heads up, WIFI is only available if you are a Box Jelly member, but
is open to the public 6:30am-3pm mon-sat
