Growing up in town, driving to the North Shore to eat garlic shrimp has always been a must. When I was a kid, a shrimp truck was a stop on the way to the beach. Now, my mom and I make the drive from Kaimukī just to eat garlic shrimp. It’s that good—if you know where to go.

On a recent drive up north, I ate at three garlic shrimp spots and ranked them.

“We’re not trying to be Lisbon or Massachusetts or San Jose. We are specifically Hawai‘i Portuguese. It struck me as so odd that there were no Portuguese restaurants in a place with such a large Portuguese population, and I wanted to bring familiar local family recipes into the local restaurant scape to honor the deep Portuguese heritage.”

Most people celebrate the new year on Jan. 1. My traditional Chinese family doesn’t officially celebrate the new year until Chinese New Year rolls around (this year it falls on Jan. 29). As a second-generation Chinese-American, Chinese New Year is a huge deal for my family. It’s right up there with celebrating a birthday, wedding or anniversary. This monthlong celebration takes a lot of planning and preparation. Expect to go grocery shopping, cook Chinese dishes and clean house to usher in a healthy, prosperous new year.

Diane Lee writes about her Chinese American experience around the lunar new year celebrations in this classic repost from 2020. https://www.honolulumagazine.com/how-to-celebrate-chinese-new-year-in-hawaii/

The restaurant is still BYOB, with bottles on some tables and other customers making quick runs to nearby liquor stores. Everything on the two-page menu is served family-style, with categories like “Flame Grilled,” “Crunchy Stuffs” and “Wraps and Bites.” Other sections list soups, mains and sweets. I clock two dozen starters alone. With so many intriguing options, I’m starting to sweat already.

A sign in the dining room reads, “Same same but different.” That pretty much sums up the food, except the differences at SingSing Thai excite and make you want to eat through the whole menu.

Tamales are traditionally eaten during celebrations, making them popular at holiday potlucks and family gatherings. At Tio’s, they can be had year-round, Tuesday through Saturday. There are three fillings: a New Mexico red with pork and mild New Mexico chile; a Santa Fe green with chicken, roasted chile and Monterey Colby cheese; and calabasitas or vegetarian with zucchini, corn, roasted jalapeño and onion. You can get them on a rice and bean plate smothered in red or green sauce or packed to go by the dozen.

Head to our link in bio for the full post on on Nu‘uanu.
