How to get the data that you actually want.
Last week I asked for feedback on my website, and got pretty consistent feedback ‘I wish your search function worked better.’
This left me and my team scratching our heads. The search function works amazingly well, and we had to find the disconnect.
We pulled some videos of people using the search tool, and one thing came through loud and clear. Many people do not know what in the heck a Boolean search term is.
Did you know that search functions aren’t built to answer queries like ‘My kid has allergies and I am looking for a natural remedy.’ They are built for ‘allergies’ AND ‘child’ AND ‘natural remedy’ OR ‘essential oil’ OR ‘supplement’ OR ‘herb.’
While Google has a good handle on sentence style search, if you’ve ever tried to search PubMed or Google Scholar and you get no hits or nothing related to what you actually want, or if Google seems to give you seemingly meaningless results, its because the search strategy is off.
So let’s talk through the bigger picture. How can you perform better searches that produce results that are meaningful to you, and actually answer your questions with data that is specifically related to you, and not simply theoretical data, animal data, or blog ‘data.’
Yet, then comes the next hurdle to overcome. If you have no science background how do you even start to read and interpret the data? Let’s talk starting points for analyzing research.
