I-696 will be closed between I-75 and M-10 (the Lodge) for two years starting March 1st. This section of the freeway, built in the mid to late 1980s after years of lawsuits and delays, will undergo a complete transformation according to MDOT.

The tunnels will also be rebuilt to prevent icicles from forming, which currently necessitates daily freeway closures for icicle removal.

MDOT advises drivers to detour south either on I-75 or the Lodge. They can then use the Davison Freeway to navigate east or west to re-enter I-696.
