I was hanging by the slenderest thread as a writer in Hollywood in 1980
Broke, writing songs and stories day & night
When I got a call from Quincy Jones...
Who wanted to record a song I had written
A jazz-inflected pop song called “What’s On Your Mind”
For George Benson
It was yet another great rescue from the maestro...
Through the intercession of the great Rod Temperton, who was essentially the
‘Billy Strayhorn’ for Quincy’s most famous decade, I was suddenly in the studio
with some of the greatest musicians in the world...and they are recording my song.
Quincy immediately made me feel like I belonged, like I was important, and the light he
shined
on me that day has been enough to fuel my entire career...
