This week’s Highland County Dog Pound Pet of the Week is Zeke, a mixed breed fella. Zeke is part sugar, part spice, and 100 percent belly-rub enthusiast. He loves walks and even jumps with excitement when he sees a leash. He knows “sit”, and is learning “stay” and “no.” Still a bit shy, Zeke rolls over for belly rubs any time they’re offered. He does have a habit of chasing cats. All he really needs is affection and a bit of training. Zeke is 1-2 years old and weighs 38 pounds. He is neutered. To meet Zeke or any of the dogs at the Highland County Dog Pound, call the dog warden at 937-393-8191 to make an appointment. The Highland County Dog Pound is located at 9357 SR 124 east of Hillsboro.

Did you know that the Christmas classic "Silent Night" was almost lost in someone's desk clutter?

For part five of our 12-part series exploring how beloved Christmas carols came to be, we look at "Silent Night," which wouldn't have become so widely known without a stroke of luck.

Editor’s Note: It’s been said that Christmas is one of the few holidays that has its own “soundtrack.” In celebration of the holida

Hillsboro City Schools will close due to illness-related absences and quarantines from Tuesday, Dec. 15 to Friday, Dec. 18, superintendent Tim Davis told The Times-Gazette.

“We have a lot of students who are quarantined,” Davis said. “We don’t have a huge number of positive cases. We’ve just got a lot of people out due to illness or quarantine. We have some people who are pending tests. And we’ve been short with [substitute teachers] all year. It’s kind of hit its peak, so we decided to shut down the last four days just to hopefully give people a little bit more time to heal up and get better before we start back again on Jan. 5.”

It all started 26 years ago when Leesburg resident Bruce Stauffer's wife, Terri, came home from Fairfield Elementary where she volunteered and asked if he would be Santa for his oldest son’s kindergarten class.

“I was fairly fit, not a single white hair on my head, could not grow facial hair, and was preaching at the Leesburg Church of Christ,” Stauffer said. “I did not want to do it but agreed on the condition that I got the class picture and all of the children’s names. The day came, and when I came out and started calling the children by name and praising some of them for things I had seen them do — they believed, and I was hooked!”

For most of his early adult life, a holiday season highlight for Bruce Stauffer was getting together with his family on Christmas Eve in Sabina and singing

Amateur astronomers in Highland County can witness an event of truly Biblical proportions on the evening of the winter solstice on Dec. 21 when a rare phenomenon will appear in the southwestern sky after sunset.

The event has been nicknamed “The Christmas Star,” in deference to the biblical account found in Matthew’s gospel of the wise men who followed a star that appeared in the eastern sky to guide them to where the Christ child would be found.
