The latest in parent book-banning frenzy/insanity. I adored this book, Wishtree by Katherine Applegate, and had it on my Best Books list the year it was published (2017). Some folks really need to get a life.

An oak tree's willingness to be called he or she canceled a group read in Floyd County, VA; themed book displays are banned in Louisiana parish; and more.

Whoa. Just looked on my timeline to see 47 lovely Happy Birthday posts. Thanks so much, friends and relatives! It was indeed a fun birthday with a delicious French dinner at Kristine’s in Princeton. Today it’s back to laundry and cooking dinner. Drat.

So, lucky me, it looks like some unlovely creep has set up an impersonation account here on Facebook with my name and photos on it. You know the drill--if you're already my friend, don't open it. You could, however, click on "REPORT PROFILE" and report it as an Imposter Account. Apparently, the impersonators are laying the groundwork for future scams.

In the meantime, we're having a lovely snow day here in scenic New Jersey. Hope all is well out your way.

Houston ISD's latest brilliant idea for getting rid of those school libraries and librarians who want kids to read those dangerous things called Books and instead using those rooms as "discipline centers." Yup, that'll teach those kids all right. Feeling nauseous about this, but love the satirical op-ed response in the Washington Post. Perfect!

Libraries used to be places we revered, places that gave everyone access to knowledge and that made us feel civilized.

I don’t know if you’ll be able to open this link to today’s heartening opinion piece in the New York Times about the marvelous Sonia Sotomayor and her trip to Mississippi to speak to kids and adults about her life, her autobiographies for kids, and the importance of reading. I was fortunate to hear her speak to an audience of many hundreds of librarians at the Midwinter ALA conference in Philly in 2000, I believe, and she was mesmerizing. She’s a force.

Sonia Sotomayor really talked to those kids. She asked their names, what they liked in school, what they wanted to do with their lives.

You gotta respect the rules! Don’t know what year this is from but it’ll be fun to share some of the rules with your students. (If I find out any more about the source, I’ll let you know. Obviously from England.)

The rules of the library. You may not tell lies to the librarian. No dirty faces in library.

My favorite library story of the year. Kudos to our fabulous Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, for inviting The fabulous Lizzo to hang out with the Library of Congress’s best-in-the-world flute collection and play us a few tunes.

A day before Lizzo’s public performance, she spent a private afternoon at the Library of Congress, playing several flutes from its collection.

I adore Jason Chin's books. Thought he deserved the Caldecott for Grand Canyon. So thrilled with his Caldecott for Watercress. You'll love this profile by his own brother.
