LOCAL: Two HHS seniors have recently announced their intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. #1 state ranked Azariah Martinez will continue wrestling at Western Colorado University next fall. Lady Whiteface standout London Baker will join the Amarillo College Badger squad next fall. London will officially sign with AC on February 19th.

The Herd are at home for the final time tonight on the hardwood. The Whitefaces need a win to split the series with Dumas and remain in 4th place in the district heading into the final regular season game on Tuesday. Senior Night tipoff is set for 7:30 and KPAN AM-FM will have live coverage with pre-game at 7:20 this evening.

Critical to extreme wildfire conditions will exist across the western Panhandle today. The western half of Deaf Smith County has the potential for wind gusts to top 55 mph this afternoon, while the Hereford area will see peak gusts near the 45 mph mark. Red Flag warnings have been issued for much of the Panhandle, eastern New Mexico and South Plains.

LOCAL: The Hereford Cattlewomen are holding their annual “Casserole and Game-Day Snacks Sale,” tomorrow beginning at 10:00 in the lobby of First Financial Bank. Most dishes feature beef and all proceeds benefit the scholarship fund that benefits a local graduate each year.

Herd wrestlers will be sent off in style this afternoon on their way to regionals. The sendoff begins at 2:30 from HHS and will travel down Avenue F to Park Avenue, then to 25 Mile Avenue and out south of town. They wrestle tomorrow and Saturday in Lubbock.

A rescheduled retirement reception for Sheri Blankenship will take place tomorrow afternoon at the Hereford ISD Administration Building. Sheri officially ended her employment with the district at the end of January after 29 years of work in Hereford. The come-and-go event is from 4:00-5:30.

LOCAL: Randall would defeat the Herd in both district basketball games last night at Whiteface Gym. Randall’s Sadie Sanchez propelled the Lady Raiders to an, 81-61, win with 50 points of her own. Mia Gomez had 17 for Hereford and Arissa Alaniz added 16. Pampa beat Dumas last night to claim the final playoff spot out of the district…The guys would follow in a physical battle but come up short to the Raiders, 90-78. Tyi Duque led all scorers with 27 points on the night. Hereford moves to 6-6 in district play and will play the final home game this Friday night against Dumas.

HEDC Board members meet at 4:30 this afternoon in a regular session. The 8-item agenda will be worked through at the Hereford Civic Center.

LOCAL: Several Hereford Whiteface wrestlers claimed district titles on Friday in the 2-5A meet. Azariah Martinez remained undefeated on his senior season and won the 175 lb. weight class, notching another win on his perfect 32-0 record. Mareetza Maceda and Maira Villarreal also won their respective weight classes in 2-5A for district championships during their senior seasons. Regionals are this weekend in Lubbock.

The Herd split with Perryton on the hardwood Friday night. The girls fell to the Rangerettes, 64-44, and will face Randall tomorrow night in a must-win district finale to keep their playoff hopes alive. The guys beat the Rangers 55-46.

#22 Texas Tech upset #6 Houston in BigXII action Saturday night in the Bayou City, 82-81. Tech moves into the 3rd place spot in conference standings with the upset win.

Hereford City Commissioners are meeting for a 7-item agenda in a regular session this evening at 6:30. Several formalities and an executive session for personnel matters are tabbed for commissioners. The meeting is open to the public at City Hall.

The area will approach or exceed record high temps this afternoon. The record in Hereford has stood since 1995 at 75°. LOCAL: Xcel Energy has announced the re-powering of the Harrington Generating Station with a transition to natural gas. The station that went online in the mid-70s was initially built as a coal and natural gas plant so the conversion was the most cost-effective way to meet federal clean air standards. The conversion will be complete by May of this year.

It’s a busy Friday for Herd athletes. The wrestling teams are on the road to Amarillo to compete in the district meet today and wrestle for a spot at regionals

Herd Soccer Teams are on the road to Pampa this evening for a pair of games. Both teams fell on Tuesday to West Plains at home and are looking for their first district win.

Whiteface Basketball Teams hit the hardwood in Perryton this evening. The girls are needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive and a win for the guys also keeps them in the hunt. KPAN AM-FM will have live coverage at 5:50 prior to the first tipoff at 6:00.

Funeral services for Luz Elena De Macias, age 80, are tomorrow at 10:00 at San Jose Catholic Church. Luz was a loving family woman especially fond of her grandchildren. She died on Wednesday in Hereford.

Above average temps and fair weather days are on-tap through the middle part of next week. Afternoon temps will peak on Monday when the 80° mark will be approached.

LOCAL: The Deaf Smith County Hospital District Board of Directors meet in a regular session this afternoon for an 11-item agenda. The meeting has an executive session tabbed for the annual CEO review and the Board will also continue discussion on a DaVinci surgical robot. The meeting is at 5:30 at the HRMC Board Room.

The Hereford High School Sports Medicine Team recently took the top spot at the West Texas Sports Medicine Symposium. The competition was at Texas Tech University on Saturuday, January 18th. The team placed 1st overall and had 1st place finishes in Anatomy and CPR. The team qualified for the state competition with the gold medal performance. Team members are Nolan Brown, Marissol Villeda, Audrina Alvarez, Callie Bullard, Illyana Salinas and Sandra Sebastian.

Funeral services for Deborah Tardy, age 77, are Saturday at 2:00 at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Amarillo. Debby worked as an assistant to Dr. Khuri for many years in Hereford. Viewing is today at Brooks Chapel in Canyon. She died on Thursday.

Funeral services for Roy Lee Fowler, age 86, are Saturday at 12:00 at the Avenue Baptist Church.

LOCAL: The Christmas Stocking Fund assisted local residents in a variety of ways to the tune of $43,959 in the first round of assistance. The CSF recently spent an additional $2,274 to aid the Hereford Food Pantry and will be working through a second round of assistance in the near future thanks to the record fundraising amount.

Registration is open for the 25th Annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake. The event is the major fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters each year and will be held March 21st and 22nd. Visit the BBBS office or call 806-364-6171 for registration info.

The Lady Herd fell to the Borger Lady Bulldogs last night in district basketball, 63-58. Samantha Grajeda had 17-points for Hereford and Mia Gomez added 16. They’re now at 5-7 in district play.

Funeral services for Roy Lee Fowler, age 86, are Saturday at 12:00 at the Avenue Baptist Church. Roy Lee was a longtime area resident who’s remembered as a loving family man. Visitation is Saturday from beginning at 11:00 at the church prior to the service. He died on Thursday.

Services will be held in Oklahoma for Juanita Wells Poteet, age 86. Juanita was a former longtime Hereford resident who worked at Holly Sugar and Frito Lay for many years. She died on Thursday in Amarillo.

Funeral services for Nelda Cardenas, age 72, are today at 2:00 at San Jose Catholic Church. Nelda was a longtime Hereford resident who died on Wednesday in Hereford. Visitation is at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home from 10:00-1:00 today.

This weekend our girls wrestled in the Lady Don tournament and placed second as a team.

Our two seniors, Maira Villarreal and Mareetza Maceda both got first. Lyla Zambrano, Layla Ortiz,Valori Porter, all took home a silver medal and Abrielle Uvalle got 3rd.

This was the last tournament before district this week at Palo Duro. Come out and cheer our boys and girls on this Friday and Saturday as we fight to move on to regionals!

LOCAL: The Hereford Lions Club honored Cindy Simons as the Citizen of the Year on Saturday evening at the Deaf Smith County Chamber of Commerce Banquet. Longtime Hereford resident Leona Schilling was inducted into the Chamber Hall of Fame and Wes Gaffney of McDonalds was honored for the new Wes Gaffney Award.

The Whitefaces got a big win Friday night when they beat 3rd place Pampa, 58-54. Juan Grijalva had 18 points for the Herd and Tyi Duque added 15. The Herd are back in 4th place with a 4-5 district record.

The Lady Herd dropped a close one to the Lady Harvesters, 51-48. Mia Gomez and Ellyana Tijerina both had 13 points for the Whitefaces but Pampa would prevail. Hereford remains one game ahead of the Lady Harvesters in 4th place at 5-6 in district play.

Herd Soccer fell to Canyon in two games on Friday and the girls and boys both move to 0-2 in district play.

The evening will feature several keynote speakers that will discuss things like market and weather outlooks. Dinner is provided and the meeting is open to individuals in the ag industry.

West Plains swept the Whitefaces in basketball action last night on their home court. The Lady Whitefaces move to 5-5 with the 45-54 loss, and the guys move to 3-5 with the 44-60 loss.

Herd Soccer fell to Dumas in both district-openers yesterday evening. The girls lost 0-6 and the guys fell in a 0-8 match that was called early due to temperatures.

Still tracking a snow squall that is dropping visibilities down to less than 1/4 mile, at times approaching white conditions. A band of moderate to heavy snow with winds along and behind the Arctic front are near 25 mph gusting to 35 mph helping to create these low visibilities. He was a 1968 HHS graduate and named the Citizen of the Year in 2017. Sid died last Thursday in Amarillo.

HISD Board of Trustees are meeting for a lengthy 16-item agenda this evening at 6:00 at the Administration Building. The regular meeting is open to the public.

Governor Greg Abbott recently appointed Dr. Kynan Sturgess to the Texas Animal Health Commission to represent veterinary medicine practitioners. Dr. Sturgess will serve on the commission through September 6, 2027, and joins another Herefordian on the commission, Johnny Trotter.

KPAN recorded a trace of snowfall on Saturday with no measurable precipitation. Snowfall is expected to be light today with an inch or less in the Hereford area.
