Jeremiah Martinez was named the Defensive Lineman of the year and Noah Zamora the Utility Player of the year in All-District football awards. First-Team honors went to Brylyn Lopez, Eli Arredondo, Ethan Gonzales, Kalub Ramirez, Lorenzo Lopez and Tell Bryant. Tyi Duque, Isaac Cantu, Anthony Mendoza and Alijah Cisneros received 2nd-Team honors. Kayden Alonzo and Jeziah Murillo were named Honorable-Mention.

Funeral services for Willie Villegas, age 81, are Friday at 2:00 at San Jose Catholic Church. Mr. Villegas was a longtime Hereford resident and worked at Armour and Company for a decade before working for Bar-G Feedyard for 42 years. If Willie was on a boat, then it would be a good day. He died on Thursday in Hereford. Visitation is Wednesday from 3:00-5:00 and Thursday from 10:00-8:00 at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Josué Peña Gamez, age 79, are today at 2:00 Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home Chapel. He died on Tuesday in Amarillo.

LOCAL: Hereford ISD Board of Trustees will meet for a 15-item agenda this evening at 6:00 at the HISD Administration Building. They’ll look to approve several upgrades around the district including walk-in freezer purchases, serving line upgrades, fence replacements and breezeway updates at the high school. An executive session is also tabbed for board members.

Hereford City Commissioners are meeting for a 9-item agenda this evening at 6:30 at City Hall. They’ll look to circumvent an Atmos rate increase of approximately 10% along with other municipalities, at least temporarily. Commissioners will also look to approve a HEDC approved incentive package for $240,000 to Hereford Bar & Grill. The agreement is for three years and stipulates the retention of 20, 25 and 15 full-time employees respectively. The meeting is open to the public.

Deaf Smith County Grand Jurors met last week and indicted 9 persons to stand trial on felony charges. The list included Zeriah Makhi Henry Castillo, for 26 felony counts of possession of child po*******hy; an offense from January 3rd, 2022. Several drug charges, bail jumping and assault of a peace officer were among the other indictments.

Funeral services for Gregory Zepeda, age 80, are Monday at 2:00 at San Jose Catholic Church. Visitations continue through Sunday from 12:00-8:00 each day at Parkside Chapel Funeral Home. Mr. Zepeda died on Wednesday.

Funeral services for Eloy Hernandez, age 70, are this morning at 11:00 at the Mendez and Mullins Chapel.

The Christmas Stocking Fund saw a rebound greater than any Wilt Chamberlain board, yesterday, when $10,300 was given from generous donors. The fund received what’s been an annual gift from The Homer Family for $5,000 to jumpstart the day.

LOCAL: Hereford High School’s Engine Building Team is competing at the National Hot Rodders of Tomorrow competition in Indianopolis, IN, this week. The auto-tech program took two teams who will compete for scholarship money by tearing down and rebuilding a motor in 30-minutes or less. There are more than thirty different programs from across the country competing.

Funeral services for Eloy Hernandez, age 70, Friday at 11:00 at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home Chapel. Eloy was a longtime Hereford resident who worked at Hereford Grain for many years along with Forerunner and Sweet Brand before retirement. Visitation is today from 5:00-8:00 at the funeral home. He died Sunday in Amarillo.

In an unusually slow day for the Christmas Stocking Fund, no donations were received yesterday which is the first in memory for many of the committee members. Donations are accepted at FirstBank Southwest through the end of the month.

LOCAL: The Lady Herd opened district play with a dominant win at home over Dumas, 45-23. Hereford is on the road to Canyon on Friday to take on the Lady Eagles before both boys and girls are in action next Tuesday.

Donations to the Christmas Stocking Fund are approaching the $15,000 mark for this 45th campaign of Hereford’s hometown holiday charity. Twenty six donors had contributed $14,102 as of yesterday afternoon. The collection point for the CSF is at FirstBank Southwest in downtown and they’re accepted through the end of the month.

Funeral services for Eloy Hernandez, age 70, Friday at 11:00 at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home Chapel. Eloy was a longtime Hereford resident who worked at Hereford Grain for many years along with Forerunner and Sweet Brand before retirement. Eloy was remembered as a loving father and grandfather. Hereford High School’s “Hostile Herd Rifle Team,” qualified for the MCJROTC Nationals. They finished the regular season with a 5-2 record in the SCOPOS National Precision Air Rifle League Distinguished Division. The competition will be held in mid-February in Anniston, AL.

Two Texas Panhandle teams have made it to the state-semifinals for football; the Gruver Greyhounds and West Plains Wolves. West Plains edged Stephenville last week to punch their ticket to the next round and Gruver downed Ropes. Gruver will face Muenster on Thursday night in Childress and West Plains will see the #1 Celina Bobcats on Friday in Abilene.

Hereford Junior High has won a CREST Counseling Award for the second year in a row. The CREST Award recognizes outstanding counseling programs that meet a variety of criteria for the award.

A fatal accident occurred yesterday morning just before 10:00 on SH 136, approximately 10 miles north of Amarillo. A pair of Ford Transit vans crashed head-on after a suspected medical episode occurred to Matthew Handlon, age 32, of Amarillo. Handlon was pronounced deceased on the scene. The other driver, 21-year-old Dillon Johnson, of Amarillo, was transported to NWTX Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Deaf Smith County Commissioners will meet tomorrow at 9:00 for an 11-item agenda. They’ll look to continue discussion on upgrades at the County Bull Barn and look at several items related to the Deaf Smith County Jail. The meeting is open the public at the courthouse.

Funeral services for Wanda Marie Burdine, age 90, will be today at 2:00 at the First Baptist Church. A visitation will be held at the church beginning at 1:00. Wanda was a bank teller at Hereford State Bank for many years. She died on Tuesday.

Slight chances for snow exist in the Hereford area overnight tonight but will be more favored to our north. A cool down is certain behind the cold front but temps will quickly rebound through the rest of the week.

A Hereford man died from injuries sustained in an accident on Friday morning just west of Friona. Donald Warren, age 57, was struck on the driver side of his vehicle on Highway 60 at approximately 11:00 Friday morning. He was transported to Parmer County Medical Center where he would succumb to his injuries.

The Cowboys host the Bengals tonight in NFL action. Kickoff is set for 7:15 and KPAN will have live coverage at 6:00.

LOCAL: Hereford Whiteface Tennis player, Brandon Ysaguirre, was named to the Texas High School Coaches Association 2024-25 Team Tennis Super Elite Team in AAAA. The team has fourteen named players, and eight of them are out of district 4-4A.

Texas AgriLife Extension’s Crop Production and Risk Protection workshop slated for this month will be offered both in-person and virtually. The workshop is an all-day event that will take place on December 18th and topics will range from general laws and regulations to Panhandle specific crop diseases and trends. Registration is $50 and can be done now at the Deaf Smith County Extension office at 806-363-3573. RSVP is requested by December 16th for a lunch count.

A quick warm-up to finish the work-week and be enjoyed this weekend will be short lived when a Pacific Northwest frontal boundary invades the area by Monday and drops daytime highs back down to the 40s and low 50s area-wide. Current forecast models predict the system to be a positively tilted, open-wave trough, which would generally be lighter on the precipitation side although talks of snow are in the forecast.

LOCAL: A 31-year-old Amarillo man was killed in an accident on I-40 just west of Groom, on Monday night. Johnathan Morales was struck as a pedestrian on I-40 at approximately 11:18 in the eastbound lanes and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The driver and passenger of a 2004 Roadtrek 190 (RV) were not injured.

Coffee Memorial Blood Center is at the Civic Center today for their final day of the Hereford Community Blood Drive. Donors will get a long-sleeve t-shirt that’s Christmas themed and appointments can be made at obi.org or by calling 806-358-4563. Donation times are from 12:00-7:00 today in the main ballroom.

Xcel Energy released additional information on its’ partnership with Pano AI and their wildfire detection technology which includes more than 50 of the 360-degree view, ultra-high-definition cameras across the region. The initial install will happen in Hemphill, Wheeler, Roberts, Gray, Hutchison, Carson, Moore and Potter counties in the Panhandle, and Cochran, Yoakum and Garza counties on the South Plains.

Early numbers from The Panhandle Gives show an 8-figure-year with online donations totaling more than $10 million.

LOCAL: Fundraising efforts begin today for the 45th edition of the Christmas Stocking Fund. The official donation collection point for the CSF is FirstBank Southwest in downtown Hereford at 300 North Main. The CSF works to assist the less fortunate of Hereford and Deaf Smith County during the holiday season.

The Deaf Smith County Library is hosting a pair of Christmas Card classes today, from 10:00-12:00 and again from 4:00-6:00. The classes are for ages 15 and above and will go through a homemade card making process.

The Christmas Parade of Lights is this evening in downtown Hereford beginning at 6:30. Entry is free and the deadline to enter a float is noon today.

Funeral services for Rex Easterwood, age 88, are tomorrow at 2:00 at the First Baptist Church. Rex was a longtime Hereford resident and very active community member serving on various social and civic club boards. He was a 1952 Dimmitt High School graduate. Rex died on Wednesday in Amarillo.

LOCAL: Xcel Energy has announced a partnership with Pano AI for the Texas Panhandle. Pano AI is a company that provides artificial intelligence based systems for rapid wildfire detection using ultra-high-definition cameras, geo satellite data, field sensors, legacy cameras, emergency alerts and other data feeds. The system will be installed in eleven counties in the Panhandle and a live demonstration is Tuesday, December 3rd, from 1:00-2:00 at Xcel’s Tech Center at 7801 East I-40.

Funeral services for Felix Quiroz, age 94, are today at 2:00 at the Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home Chapel. Felix was a Hereford resident for more than 50 years. He was a farm laborer and would eventually work at Wall and Sons for many years. Mr. Quiroz died on Saturday in Hereford.

Former longtime Hereford resident Ruth Fish, age 89, died on Saturday. Ruth served in leadership roles for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls. She was also involved in the Panhandle Plains Writers Association and the American Association of University Women.

A cold front barrels through the area today and will drop temps to the 40s by sunset. Light rain and snow chances this evening and overnight.

LOCAL: This Thanksgiving might be a white one in the Hereford area as new forecast models are pointing to snow chances. The northwestern part of the Panhandle will see the best chances for more than an inch of accumulation, but the Hereford area could also see that much in some scenerios. A cold front will move through sometime tomorrow afternoon/evening and quickly drop temps before an openwave trough follows bringing the precip chances with it.

Deaf Smith County Commissioners met at 9:00 this morning for a 9-item agenda. They discussed overtime at the jail, a new dump truck purchase and document storage for the county among the items.

Funeral services for Florencio Zamora, age 78, are today at 10:00 at St. Anthyony’s Catholic Church. Mr. Zamora was a longtime Hereford resident and worked for Farr Better Feeds for 27 years. One of his fondest memories was delivering feed to the Lonesome Dove Ranch. He died on Saturday.

LOCAL: Several Lady Whitefaces received post-season honors for their work on the volleyball court in District 4-4A play. London Baker was named the Co-Offensive MVP for the district. Seniors Jynae Fletcher and Karizma Treviño were both named to the first team, and Cambry Smith and Madi Madrigal received second team honors. Lexi Vallejo was named honorable mention.

The Panhandle Gives annual fundraising campaign is underway now through December 3rd. The campaign is partnering with 234 non-profit organizations from around the Panhandle and provides a matching percentage of donations through the Amarillo Area Foundation’s Amplification Fund. Locally Big Brothers Big Sisters, Great Plains CASA for Kids and Hereford Sports and Wellness are participating. Visit thepanhandlegives.org to donate. As of 9:00 this morning $185k had been raised through the online platform.

WEATHER: (November 22, 2024) FRIDAY - High yesterday was 62° at 3:00; this morning’s low was 32° at 7:00. KPANcast: Sunny and nice with a high near 65°.

LOCAL: The Whitefaces put together a valiant effort but would come up short to #3 Stephenville in the area playoff round, 35-7. Kalub Ramirez connected with Tyi Duque for the Herd’s lone score on an 18 yard touchdown pass halfway through the 1st quarter. It was a 7-7 ball game going into the 4th quarter before the Yellowjackets would capitalize on turnovers and ultimately get the win. Hereford finishes the 2024 campaign at 8-4.

Taytum Stow continues an illustrious career at West Texas A&M University receiving Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second time in Lone Star Conference play. Stow averages 1.28 blocks per set, 118 total blocks on the year and an attack percentage of .353…WT beat Lubbock Christian yesterday and advances in LSC tourney play and will face Dallas Baptist University in the semifinals at 7:30 tonight in Canyon.

Funeral services for Mike Gallagher, age 83, are Saturday at 10:00 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Mike worked at Plains New Holland for 25 years before eventually retiring from the Yosten’s Farm. He was a lifelong resident who died on Monday in Waco. Viewing is today from 2:00-8:00 at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Jean Jackson will be Saturday at 10:30 at the Central Church of Christ. Jean was a former longtime Hereford resident and educator.

Funeral services for Peggy Allred Kerley, age 76, are tomorrow at 2:00 at Palo Duro Baptist Church in Wildorado.
