LOCAL: The latest release from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows quite the improvement for Deaf Smith County from the previous week. Currently 80.42% of the county has no drought conditions, compared to 45.81% a week ago. Just a slight portion of far western Deaf Smith remains in D1 at .38%, with the remaining 19.58% in the D0 or abnormally dry category.

Funeral services for Adolfo Del Toro, age 88, are Monday at 10:00 at San Jose Catholic Church. A viewing and visitation is being held Sunday from 2:30-8:00 at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home. Adolfo was a skilled carpenter and also worked as a sheep shearer among his career paths. He’s remembered as a loving family man. He died on Wednesday in Amarillo.

The VFW is holding a fundraising dinner tomorrow for Post renovations. The calf-fry and chicken nugget dinner with all the fixings is $10 and served from 5:00-8:00 at the VFW Post at 130 Veterans Park Road. A karaoke contest will follow

Another round of showers and thunderstorms could impact the western Panhandle this evening before precipitation chances all but vanish from the extended forecast. Confidence is increasing in favor of a long stretch of triple digit temps beginning Sunday or Monday.

The John Pitman Golf Course is closed Friday-Sunday for the Pudge Kendrick Memorial Tournament. The two-day, two-man scramble runs Saturday and Sunday with a VIP round on Friday. The course will re-open to the public on Monday.

Funeral services for Mary Crist, age 90, are today at 2:30 at Mendez and Mullins Chapel. Mary was a longtime Hereford resident and accomplished artist. Visitation is 1:00-2:00 today at the funeral home. She died on Friday in Hereford.

Graveside services for Juan Jose Zamora Sr., age 65, are Friday at 1:00 at West Park Cemetery. Johnny was a longtime Hereford resident and worked for TxDOT for many years. He died on June 29th.

Alyssa was a 2018 HHS graduate and is remembered as an instrumental part of her family and someone who was very family oriented. The American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum will offer free entry on Saturday for their Free Family Fun Day. Among the activities included are storytelling, crafts, self-guided museum tours and the opportunity to see a real American Quarter Horse in the arena. LOCAL: The Independent Community Bankers of America named First National Bank as a Top 10 agricultural lender earlier this month. First National Bank was named No. 7 with a score of 94.7 out of 100. The ICBA used FDIC data from 2023 to calculate the score. First National Bank has locations in Hereford, Friona and Amarillo/Canyon and was recognized in the category among community banks for ag lending with less than $300 million in assets.

McDonald’s of Hereford will be recognized as the Round-Up for RMHC Champion this afternoon at 2:45 at the Hereford restaurant. Hereford patrons donated $2,293.33 in the second quarter of the year by rounding up to the nearest dollar on order totals. There were 25 area stores that participated and $13,006.86 was raised in total for the RMHC of Amarillo.

Funeral services for Celia Moreno Torres, age 67, are today at 2:00 at San Jose Catholic Church. Celia was a longtime Hereford resident and homemaker. She’s remembered as a loving mother and grandmother. Mrs. Torres died on Saturday in Hereford.

LOCAL: DPS Troopers seized more than 242 pounds of suspected co***ne on Saturday near Vega. Texas Highway Patrol stopped a 2020 Kia Sportage on I-40 in Oldham County for a traffic violation. The trooper found three large duffle bags in the trunk with 100 plastic wrapped bundles of the illegal drug. The driver, Ezequiel Canela-Cabrera, age 29, of Kissimmee, FL, was arrested on felony drug charges.

Hereford’s City Wide Garage Sale is this Saturday, July 20th. The deadline to be featured in the Hereford Brand and official DSC Chamber of Commerce map is noon today. Register at the Chamber at 701 N. Main. The $10 fee covers the permit and related promotions.

A woman was killed walking along I-40 approximately 6 miles east of Vega early yesterday morning. Virginia Leutkahans, 80, of Amarillo, is believed to have been in an earlier vehicle accident and was walking in the west bound lanes shortly after 2 AM when she was struck by a driver who tried to avoid the collision. She was pronounced deceased on the scene.

A welcome pattern change occurs for the High Plains weather this evening sparked by a cold front that will bring a reprieve from the triple digits. Set between two features in the southwest and Great Lakes region, northwesterly flow will impact the area with a return to the monsoonal pattern off the southern Rockies.

LOCAL: Former President Donald Trump escaped an assassination attempt on his life Saturday at a rally in Butler, PA. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was able to take a rooftop position approximately 120 meters from the former president and rattled off multiple shots with a long rifle, one of those grazing Trump’s ear. Crooks and a spectator, 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, were killed in the gunfire.

Hereford City Commissioners will meet in a regular session this evening at 6:30 for a 14-item agenda. The meeting is at City Hall and is open to the public. Commissioners will look to approve two HBAB façade improvement grants at The Water Lot and KNNK Radio, discuss and possibly approve a contract with Republic Waste Services and hear an update from the HEDC among the items.

HISD Board of Trustees meet in a special session at 6:00 today at the Administration Building. They’ll work through a 7-item agenda.

The HISD Board of Trustees will meet in a special session on Monday evening for a 7-item agenda. Among the items is a tabbed executive session to possibly discuss employment terms for Dr. Ralph Carter, the lone finalist for the HISD Superintendent position. Financial incentive amounts have been announced for Texas A&M AgriLife’s Texas Climate-Smart Initiative. Funding comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service to the tune of $65 million. LOCAL: The Deaf Smith County Historical Society is accepting nomination forms for their Farmer/Rancher of the Year award through the 1st of August. The award will be announced at the Hereford Jubilee on the third Saturday in August, which falls on the 17th this year. Nomination forms are available at the Deaf Smith County Museum and several businesses around town and need to be returned to the museum by Thursday, August 1st.

Two Texas lakes were named among the Top 10 places for bass fishing in the country by Bassmaster. The list puts O.H. Ivie Lake and Lake Fork both in the Top 5, with O.H. Ivie in the No. 2 spot and Lake Fork at No. 5. The lakes are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively for the Central Division. O.H. Ivie has produced 35 Toyota ShareLunkers (8 pounds or heavier) in the first four months of the year, and 12 of those were Legacy Class bass that weighed more than 13 pounds. The St. Lawrence River in New York near the Thousand Islands was named the best place for bass fishing in the country.

LOCAL: KPAN recorded .33 of an inch of rain in downtown Hereford this morning. Showers and thunderstorms produced spotty but certainly beneficial totals in the area. Notable totals included .5 of an inch at the Mesonet site on the west side of Hereford, .6-1.2 inch totals were measured between Hereford and Milo Center, .8 of an inch just southeast of North Star Dairy and .28 of an inch at Bootleg. KPAN’s 48-hour-total stands at .37 of an inch. Another day of shower and thunderstorm chances favoring the western Panhandle will be on tap for the KPAN listening area. Flash flooding in urban and already saturated areas and strong winds will be the main hazards.

German Fest takes place this Saturday in Nazareth. The day begins with a free Ogallala Commons Playa Tour from 8:30-11:30. Registration is at the Home Mercantile in downtown and will feature a walking and driving tour of surrounding playa lakes. A classic car show and bingo both begin at 10:30 Saturday morning, and the annual “Authentic German Meal” begins at 11:00 at the Community Hall. LOCAL: A recent study from Cotton Incorporated shows that synthetic fabrics leak 8.3 million metric tons of macroplastics and microplastics into the environment each year. The study found that was 10x the number of leakage from cotton or other natural fiber clothes. The majority of those, or 98%, are in the macroplastic form and come from improper disposal.

KPAN measured .04 of an inch of rain this morning in downtown Hereford. A line of storms diminished as they approached the Hereford area yesterday morning, resulting in just more than a sprinkle. The same line produced .25 at Sims in central Deaf Smith County. Rain chances will exist again today and tomorrow with the western third of the Panhandle most favored under the continued monsoonal flow from the mountains to the west. Then an upper level ridge sets in to dominate the region and provide warm and dry conditions from Thursday-early next week.

The Hereford Food Pantry is open from 9:00-12:00 today and tomorrow to accept donations. They’re open for food assistance each Monday and Friday from 12:00-3:00 at 900 North Lee.

Deaf Smith County Commissioners are meeting for a 7-item agenda tomorrow morning at 9:00 at the Deaf Smith County Courthouse. They’ll look at paving projects and a contract to possibly house Potter County inmates at the Deaf Smith County Law Enforcement Center. The meeting is open to the public.

City Commissioners meet tonight in a regular session for a 10-item agenda. They’ll look to appoint and then swear in the newly appointed City Secretary Franchesca Jimenez. The commission will also look to approve an agreement allowing Xcel Energy to continue operations in Hereford for another 10 years among the items. The meeting is at City Hall at 6:30 and is open to the public.

Funeral services for Michael “Tiny” Leal, age 53, are Wednesday at 10:00 at the Nazarene Family Church. Michael was a longtime Hereford resident and 1989 HHS graduate. Visitation is tomorrow from 1:00-8:00 at Mendez and Mullins Family Funeral Home. He died on Thursday in Hereford.

LOCAL: Rusty Pit BBQ is opening their doors for a rare Saturday lunch line special in a fundraising effort for Dennis Brito. Dennis is undergoing treatment for lung cancer and faces a mountain of medical bills. The lunch will feature a brisket plate with beans, rice, drink and dessert for $15. Serving begins at 11:00 until sold out.

Early reports compiled by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension show a mixed-bag in the early going for High Plains Wheat Harvest. Spotty or non-existent rains during grain fill, especially in the western Panhandle, will provide for dismal numbers on dryland acres for many producers. A report from western Deaf Smith showed just 10 bushels per acre which pales in comparison to producers east of Amarillo reporting 45 bushels per acre and early reports from Ochiltree County of 40-60 bushels per acre for dryland wheat.

The John Pitman Golf Club is closed today through Monday for the Tierra Blanca Classic. The two-day, two-man scramble features local and regional golfers competing for bragging rights and prizes. The course is open to tournament golfers for a practice round today, with official play taking place Saturday and Sunday. The course re-opens to the public on Tuesday.

LOCAL: The Hereford ISD Board of Trustees named a lone finalist for the HISD Superintendent position yesterday. Dr. Ralph Carter will officially be appointed after a customary state-mandated waiting period. Dr. Carter comes to Hereford from Lipan ISD, on the outskirts of Fort Worth, where he currently serves as Superintendent.

KPAN recorded .28 of an inch of rain at 7:00 this morning from evening showers yesterday. A band of storms formed along HWY 385 in the central and northern parts of Deaf Smith County and produced substantial rainfall with totals ranging between 1-1.75 inches. Other notable totals include 2.36 at Goodnight, .96 at Vega, .86 of an inch in Friona, .44 of an inch at Dawn and .35 of an inch at the West Texas Mesonet site in Hereford.

The Deaf Smith County Hospital District Board of Directors is meeting for an 11-item agenda this afternoon at 5:30 at Hereford Regional Medical Center. They’ll hear a May Staff Report and meet in executive session for personnel matters and quality report updates. The meeting is open to the public at the Board Room at HRMC.

LOCAL: The Deaf Smith County Hospital District Board of Directors will meet in a regular session tomorrow afternoon at 5:30 for an 11-item agenda. They’ll hear a report from Dr. Rohm on May’s medical staff and then move into a closed session for personnel matters and quality reports. That’s among the items to be discussed. The meeting is open to the public at the HRMC Board Room.

The HISD Board of Trustees met for their 3rd of three special sessions at 8:30 this morning. The 5-item agendas had executive closed sessions tabbed to interview Superintendent candidates and then allowed time for deliberation.

Funeral services for Paige Arnold Shelton, age 68, are Monday afternoon at 2:00 at Parkside Chapel Funeral Home. Paige was a longtime Hereford resident who died on Friday in Amarillo.

Another afternoon shot of Rocky Mountain disturbances occurs today with the NW Panhandle most favored for any severe weather hazards. The upper level ridge will take a stronger grip on our region tomorrow and Friday limiting any rain chances. Heat Advisories have been issued for the southeastern Panhandle and Palo Duro Canyon.
