DEVASTATING HOUSE FIRE
At about 8 am this morning the call went out to Hennessey Fire about a house with a lot of smoke coming out of the attic. Moments later, flames were spotted as the fire quickly consumed the roof. The home of Mike and Kamiee Smith located at 2516 N 2850 Rd. Northwest of Hennessey was a total loss. The family had been building this new home for the past year and a half and was only lacking cabinets and flooring. A passerby noticed the fire and contacted the Smiths, Mike was sleeping in the adjacent shop building, that had been their temporary home.
When firefighters arrived the roof was fully engulfed in flames. They quickly worked to protect the shop building, as well as working the house fire. Hennessey called for help from Waukomis, Dover, and Drummond; all three sent water tankers and firefighters. Clay Vincent, with the county, brought an old Hennessey fire tanker truck to help with the water. Kingfisher County Emergency Management was also on the scene supporting the fire crews.
There were no injuries reported and all family members and animals were accounted for and safe. As of now, there are no details available as to the cause of the fire.
If you would like to help the Smith family you may make a donation to the Hennessey Community Action Team (CAT) at the Hennessey Community State Bank. Photos by AAH Jack Quirk

We have had a lot of requests about how our new office on Main St. is going. If I had to describe it in one word, it would be โSlowly.โ What started as a paint job and some flooring has turned into a major restoration of this 100-year-old building. Turning it into a modern office has brought many challenges. I would say we are at about 80% done and almost ready to start painting the interior. So far, we have replaced the roof and windows, installed a new central heat and air system, rewired the entire building, added some walls, and pulled over 1000 feet of network cable. We hoped to be moving in this month, but it looks more like September at this point. When done, we will have an open house and party! Stay Tuned! Jack.
DREAMS TO PLAY IN THE NBA: Jael Torres
by AAH Shelley Muzny
Jael Torres, is the son of Sandra and Hilario Torres. Jael graduated this past May from Hennessey High School. Jael was named to the Small West Team, which consisted of 10 of the best players in classes 3A, 2A, and A.
The Small West team played the Small East team at the annual OCA All-State Games this past July in Sapulpa, OK. Jael was accompanied by his coach, Brady Page, a proud moment for both of them. Along with the recognition received at the All-State Games, Jael also earned an All-State ring. The Hennessey Sports Boosters generously provided Jael with his very own All-State Lettermanโs jacket to commemorate his achievement.
Jael was not only an All-State player but also an All-Star. The difference between the two, he said, is that All-State is more competitive- itโs the best of the best. Ten players were picked for the All-Star team that played 2A against 3A at UCO.
Jaelโs first love for basketball started when his mom signed him up to play at the YMCA, and Kelly Vinson was his coach. As time went by and he got older, people saw him playing, and he was invited to be on a traveling basketball team. Torres has been on a traveling basketball team since 6th grade and has played every summer since.
When he got into high school, the traveling team went to Georgia, Texas, Kansasโฆa little bit of everywhere. While playing for Hennessey High School, Jael started as a freshman and made the 1,000-point club, All-Star, and All-Conference. He leaves this week to continue playing Basketball for McPhearson College in Kansas. Jaelโs goal is to play in the G-League, dream is to advance to the NBA.
ANOTHER GREAT HENNESSEY RODEO!!
The Hennessey Rodeo was two nights of so much fun! A limited amount of T-shirts are still available for sale for $20 each. As a tribute to the late Colonel Derek Grimes, these special shirts feature 28 stars in recognition of Colonel Grimes' 28 years of dedicated service, as well as a nod to the OSU Cowboys (he was a big fan). The phrase "I want to be a cowboy baby" on the shirts cleverly combines the world of rodeo cowboys with the OSU cowboys. If you would like to purchase your own shirt, you can contact Lacey Copeland by phone or email at 405-853-5126 or at or [email protected] you can also contact Lacey if you would like to be a sponsor for next year. Thank you to The Hennessey Lionโs Club for running the concession stand, cooking the hamburgers and hotdogs, and the Hennessey Roundup Club for putting on another great rodeo. photos by AAH photographer Shelley Muzny
Where are they now? Josh Bryan
Josh Bryan, born and raised in Lacey, OK, by David and Linda Bryan. Josh is the youngest of four siblings (Chevez, Shannon and Jessica). Josh went to Hennessey Public Schools and graduated in 2004. After graduation he attended Oklahoma State University until December 2006. It was at this point, Josh knew where he belonged and came home to the family farm. Josh continues helping his dad on the farm. Joshโs day can range from cattle, farming to anything in between. Josh has had a great example in his dad to watch and learn through good times in cattle and through rough times. When it comes to cattle Josh doctors them as a prevention and then if sick, tags, brands and looks at them daily. Then farming comes into playโฆ if we could all be cattlemen without farming, life would be easier (nothing to break down) but it doesnโt work that way. When its time to farm, Josh plants rye and wheat then will turn cattle out on it to make it through the winter. Also, cut hay and bale the hay, haul it in from the field and pray your crop has produced enough to make it through the winter.
Josh met his wife Bri in 2008 at Canton Lake and they married in Douglas, Wyoming May 22, 2010. Bri is originally from Wyoming and came to OU, where she studied and earned her radiology Tech degree. Josh and Bri have two children, they attend Okeene Public Schools. Josh and Bri love raising their kids in the country. Josh loves spending time with his family and friends. Josh has a hard work ethic, dedicated to his family, and is loyal, kind and honest. Cattle and farming is not a job, itโs a lifestyle and Josh is living his best life and doing a great job at it. JERZIE MCLANE HEADED TO NATIONALS
by AAH Shelley Muzny
Jerzie McLane is an 8th grader at Hennessey Middle School. She is the daughter of Tyrel McLane and Jennifer Hau. While playing on the Hennessey 7th and 8th grade softball team, Jerzie also plays travel ball. Jerzieโs love for sports started when she was 5 years old, playing t-ball with her mom as the coach. After t-ball, Jerzie took off and hasnโt looked back.
She has been on a travel team for four years. Jerzie and her travel team have played all over the state of Oklahoma and into Kansas. Jerzie has played five positions (catcher,1st, 2nd & 3rd bases, and center) for All-State.
Typically, Jerzie can be found in the outfield or catcher. Her favorite position to play is catcher or 3rd base. She likes those positions because she says, โYou can get them in a pickle.โ McLane has had an out with every position she has played.
Jerzie played an All-State game on August 3, 2024, in Shawnee at the Fire Lake Fields. To play in the All-State game, the player has to be nominated by a coach. After witnessing Jerzieโs athleticism and pure talent at All-State, she was invited to Nationals.
Nationals take place in Florida this coming December. The softball girls that played at All-State were placed on teams. Each dugout had different coaches. Jerzie played for three different sets of coaches. After the games, the coaches met and decided what players would be invited to Nationals. Only 600 players are invited and have the chance to play at the Nationals, and Jerzie is one of them! Jerzieโs favorite thing about softball is that itโs so active.
